Has anyone bought/made them? Are they easy to prepare? I have never made crablegs at home. We don't have a membership, but are thinking about it....unless you can purchase there for the 10% non-member fee like at Sam's. DS has asked for either pizza or crab for Christmas dinner after I asked what eh would like. He is nt a fan of turkey and for years has had to eat it as the extended family requests it. This year it is just 4 of us on the actual day so I thought I might be able to pull off crab this time and surprise him!

LOVE CRAB LEGS!!!!!! DH and I have them new years eve and our anniversary. Dh just steams them in a big pot and serves with hot butter, salad and crusty bread:love:

I'm not sure if you can do a one time purchase at Costco for an added fee or not. Try calling your local Costco and asking. If they don't, membership is $55 and good for one year. They have all sorts of tasty foods and good deals on tons of items so it may be worth it to join. It's not just for big families, I joined when I was still single and found enough savings on non-food items to justify the membership.

I believe they come precooked so you really just need to reheat and serve. My husband loves them, he just slathers them in garlic butter and bakes them in the oven for 10-15 minutes until they are warmed through.

Any king crab legs you buy in a store will be already cooked, and previously frozen. Just reheat them (baking, steaming, boiling, even microwaving can all work), serve with melted butter, and enjoy.

I have boiled them in a big pot and baked them in the oven. They are one of the simplest things to make and the directions are right on the package. If you boil them you can put seafood seasoning, garlic, etc in the water and it will pick up the flavor.

Thanks everyone. When I did a search of reviews, Costco's were very wellreceived so that's why I zero'd in on them. I called, but bimmer, have to have a membership. Good to know they are so easy to prepare, would you guys say they are of high quality/taste? Is there another brand you would recommend over Costco's?

Costco's are always good, do you anyone who has a membership that you can go with? I think I've seen somewhere online a trial membership? I've bought crab from whole foods and we have the pike place market with fresh seafood, do you have any meat markets?

The king crab legs you get from just about any source are likely to be pretty close to identical, the only difference possibly being size. I can't generally recall ever coming across any that are of truly low quality per se.

I'm not a member anymore, it wasn't really worth it to us as I can buy with coupons and sales and get deals that are close to the same without a $55 yearly fee. However, I also have a good friend who has a membership and if I want to go I ask her when she's going and we plan a visit together. I really should ask her when she's going as I'd like to get a few things, like butter....and now, maybe crab legs. LOL I was considering doing a shrimp pasta for our Christmas dinner this year, maybe I can add some crab legs as well. :) Thanks OP.

Why are you adverse to a membership?

I've been a member since early August - I love Costco!

not adverse, just not in the budget at this time...especially for a one time purchase. My DS eats maybe 5 different things, DD just moved to San Francisco, so as much as I would like the option of having Costco to shop from, paying $55 right now to do so is far down the list. I may do it, but falls under luxury right now. Glad you like it tho, that is good to hear.

Our local fishmarket gave us the following instructions on boiling frozen king crab legs and we've successfully prepared them this way for years:

Place frozen legs in stockpot of water. Once water reaches a boil, time it for 3 minutes. Remove, drain and eat yourself silly. Sounds crazy, but evidently the slow heating thaws the crab & the last 3 minutes heat them to perfection.

He also turned us onto the best way of shelling - forget seafood crackers, zip through those shells with a good set of kitchen shears!

(Now I want crab legs...)

Crab shears work better than regular kitchen shears; you want something with a curved blade. Also, pre-cooked crab legs are almost never seasoned, so if you want them to have some flavor, put plenty of seasoning in the warming water, and split the shells before you warm them so that the seasoning can quickly get inside. I strongly advise against microwaving -- it gives crab a rubbery texture.

If you are boiling to warm them, add a couple of tablespoons of oil to the water; it will make them easier to pick.

You'll need tools for eating King crab. The shells are fairly tough, so ripping by hand won't do it. A good set of picks is also important so that you don't waste the meat. Mallets are a total waste, though: overkill.

These are cheap and work well:

IME, a good Asian market will always have crab tools in stock at bargain prices. They have frozen crab as well. Also, FWIW, snow crab is a lot less expensive than king, and doesn't differ all that much in flavor.

If you can get a friend to buy you a Costco cash card, no membership is needed. Ths is a good way to get gas a great price too. Buy in any denomination! I have an executive membership and always make more on my cash back than the cost. Just returned from a Disney cruise booked through Costco and received a 215 cash card!

You get two membership cards per costco account, you could split it with a friend. I split the membership with my mom. She came with me the day I bought it and gave me her half of the membership in cash. I took my picture and she took hers and we each have a card in our names. It's perfect.
