Just back from a trip to the Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Water Park...They had a really great set up for recycling...In the room there was a very large cardboard box with two large paper bags inside (one for paper and one for plastic)...The box was right next to the kitchen garbage can...Those same boxes were found throughout the lodge and the water park area...It made recycling so simple...We recycled everything we could...

The last few times we stayed at DVC (it has been a year now) we tried our best to recycle...I think we recycled about 90% of what we could from our rooms...But it was such a pain because of having to carry it down the hall...We made the effort because we feel that it is important...I think that more members might recycle if they had a similar set up to the one at Six Flags...

Also, I remember finding recycle cans around the parks difficult...I know there were some bins when we were there last but not lots...Has it changed much over this past year? I would love to see recycle bins clearly marked and quite accessable around the parks and resorts...

Do you recycle when you are in the world? Would you like to see a better system? Please vote...You can select more than one.

The recycling program at Disney is not good at all....there is so much waste.
It needs a better system.

Each disposal area should have 4 separate bins. paper/paper products, glass/cans/plastics, compostables and lastly a spot for garbage.

Here in Nova Scotia we only have garbage removal once every 2 weeks and you are only allowed 1 black garbage bag!

You use blue bags for paper/paper products, another blue bag for glass/cans/plastics etc.

A Green Cart on wheels is for food wastes/leaves for compostables

We usually have 4 - 6 blue bags at curbside and 1 black.

My father had me recycling long before it was the responsible thing to do (about 35 years ago). I have always found it hard to find recycling bins in the park, but I still carry my empties around till I find one. I do my best to recycle in the villas, but you're right, they sure don't make it easy.
Maybe Mousekeeping/Maintainence does the sorting somewhere else.....

When you do one of the behind the scenes tour...we did one at the MK, I forget the name, you learn that Disney does recycle everything, and they do not simply rely on the guests to get things right. Everything is put in the proper bin eventually. I was very very impressed with what we learned about recycling at WDW

in the parks and resort public areas, properly labelled recycle containers should be placed wherever there is a garbage container.

if not, most (not all) people will put the recycle item in the container immediately available.
that is how garbage gets into a recycle container and vice versa.

in the resort rooms, the recycle containers need to be a little larger to accommodate the recycled products.

recycle technology exists that permits metal glass, plastics and paper to be mixed for disposal and transportation, and then separated again by machine to individual commodities in vast quantities.

don't forget, disney is also recycling old vegetation into mulch, food waste into livestock feed, reclaimed water for irrigation.

there is a lot more to recycle than bottles and cans.
they are doing a fair job, but there is always room for improvement.

This is great news to know! We always recycle at home. We are fortunate that we are provided with these blue bins that are the same size as our garbage bins. Everything can go in there without the need to sort it - plastic, glass, cardboard, paper. etc. I do not know how they do it, but we love it and it makes it so easy to do!

We have seen the recycle containers for bottles both in the parks and in the resorts. We were glad to see the small recycle container in our villa at SSR, but I agree, it was wayyyy to small.

I do have a question though. We asked at the resort about putting cardboard & paper in the recycle bin and were told that it is not recycled. Is there a place in the resort that we can take it to? If so, how do you find it?

Doh... you beat me to the punch.

The reason they don't make guests do it is mostly because they can't be trusted. People mostly use recycle bins as trash cans. Even when there are 3-4 in a row (ie Trash, Plastic, Glass, Metals.)

A lot of people don't know this but in the US, if there is ANY contamination in the bin everything in it ends up in the landfill.

So when someone tosses the end of there lunch in the recycle bin, the recycler will toss the whole bin. Some of them will only sort the Aluminum out of it, since recycled Aluminum is worth enough to bother, and you can automatically sort it with a electrostatic separator.

In our hometown, we have curbside recycling with a single recycle bin on wheels. We put all sorts of recyclables in the blue bin and they sort it at the plant. The lid tells you what you can put in the container and what you can't.

At WDW, we always use the green can for our newspapers, plastic, etc. If it gets full, we just take it to the trash room into the recycle bin.

That's good to know. I'm sure for every person who takes the time to recycle there are two (or more :scared: ) who don't. I'm glad to hear that WDW takes the time to recycle behind the scenes.

Ours works like this as well. We were surprised the we didn't need to sort it. I'm originally from KS, and we ALWAYS had to have separate containers for everything. Now, we just put all recyclables in one bin (the blue one ;) ) and the trucks come and pick up. Very convenient and easy to use.
