recovering deleted or corrupt images

I have had good luck by just deleting the problem file, and the one before and after it (if necessary). After deleting the problem file, the other files become accessible, sometimes.

I did end up recovering the missing files. 62 of them in all. I did what Groucho suggested. That didn't work. So I just downloaded Photo Rescue. Worked like a charm.

Thanks to all.

Glad you got them back. I've had that happen as well - during our WDW trip. :scared1:

I have mostly Lexar cards and they came with Image Rescue - it worked really well for me.

It's been discussed before, usually as the result of a panic'd poster looking for advice on recovering photos from a failed CF card. Smart Data Recovery from SmartPCTools is the featured title on the "Giveaway of the Day" site which makes available 1 software title (usually around $20 for a license but this one is normally $50). You'll get a fully licensed copy if you download and install it today.

I've not used it before but have gotten some useful and good quality software from the giveawayoftheday site in the past.

I use Image Rescue which came with my Lexar cards.

I was playing around on our Kodak Easyshare software today and found a feature to burn dvds. Well it ran a self check and found a whole slew of pics that is said appear to have been deleted and that I could browse for them to reconnect the photo. I am guessing DW cleared out her ebay pics many moons ago and when doing mass deletes didnt realize the girls bday party pics were in the mix from when they were very young. :scared1: I am estimating these were deleted say a year or so ago. Am I plain out of luck at finding these? The kodak program shows me a small image of the ones that are now missing.

Thanks for the suggestion! I just downloaded the software and ran the scan but unfortunatly it was unable to find any files that it could recover. :sad1:

Any hope for me still??

Thanks for the additional link. that one did find several hundred pics but unfortunatly they couldnt be opened. Bummer!

Unfortunately undelete software is usually only effective if used very shortly after the deletion. The small versions of the images you are seeing are just thumbnails the software created and stored so it would be able to display them quickly. If the originals have been gone for that long, they are likely gone for good :(

I was guessing as much, but was keeping fingers crossed for a magic cure. Is there any way to do something with the thumbnails it creates?

Take screenshots and print your own postage stamps? ;)

Sorry not really a situation for humor. The thumbnails won't do you any good really. Just take this as a lesson and set up a backup solution for yourself.. most external hard drives nowadays come with really user friendly backup software.

I had files recovered from my hard drive last year after being deleted. It is not easy or cheap.

In my case, I had gotten a new computer and was transferring things over, when some folders got deleted before being copied. I took it to Best Buy and the Geek Squad. It was what they called a Level one recovery. Cost $129. There are 3 levels.

What I learned was that after things are deleted, their space on the hard drive is held until something is put on top of it. In other words anything that you may have added since they were deleted may have copied over them.

In my case, I was lucky because I was in the process of taking things off the computer, so nothing new was added to cover them up. If it's been a year since these pics were deleted, you have probably added software, pictures etc that could have copied over the old pics.

Another drawback is that you will be without your computer for a while if you try the recovery. You have to take your hard drive in and they send it into a recovery lab. It did take much less time than they estimated for mine. they said it could be 5 weeks, but I had the discs and hard drive back in about 10 days.

Lesson Learned for sure! Thanks for everyones help! I did purcahse a dvd burner a couple of weeks back so I will be burning for sure!

I was able to recover over 10,000 pics, from a hard drive that was formatted and had windows xp installed on it... using a program called recover my files...

the program cost me about 90 dollars but was well worth it..

if I remember right they have a free download that will show if there are files to recover, but it won't recover them 'till yu pay to unlock the rest of the program..

I used a program called Winhex. Recovered 7 layers of photos from a 8MB CF card. (over 64MB)

Forgot if it's free or not.

I'm hoping someone can help. I put my xd card in the reader on my laptop and it came up error and wanted me to reformat the disk. I clicked no and when I right click on properties it shows that the disk is still full. I then put another card in and the pictures came up, but then when I went to copy them on a disk something happened and now it is showing the card as empty. I think there is something wrong with the reader on my laptop. Please Please Please someone tell my my photos are not lost. Is there a way to recover these? :(

There is a chance they are still there. Just this past weekend I accidently deleted some off the card that was in my camera( I thought I clicked on download when in actuality I clicked on delete)

I was able to find a free photo recovery program which was able to recover and save my photos.

I used this program:

If you think there is problem with your card reader you can buy an external one that hooks up to your USB port.
