I'm going on the eastern cruise and would like some recommendations on some good bottles of rum to pick up at the islands. I played it safe on the last cruise and just went with Captian Morgan's Spiced Rum. Looking for something more adventurous next time.

 :sunny:

I'm not sure of the name of it...but its a vanilla rum...its difficult to find in the states...my old roommate used to special order it...you could try to find it...If I find the name of it I'll re-post

Well, since you are asking...Cuban rum is the best there is... A good brand is HAVANA CLUB, there is the SILVER DRY - clear rum, great for daiquiri's. There is the ANEJO 3 YEAR OLD, that is a nice light amber color, and has some good flavor, great for mojitos, Cuba Libres, and even straight. Not bad. Then, there's ANEJO RESERVA which is getting into the realm of sipping rum - it comes in a dark bottle, and is a syrupy, sweet, rich flavor. There is then an ANEJO RESERVA DE ORO, which is, in my view, a better option than the Anejo Reserva...it is a richer golden color, comes in a clear bottle, and is very, very good, straight, neat or on the rocks. Finally, there is the ANEJO 7 YEAR OLD, which comes in a dark bottle, with a black label, and is the flagship of the regular production line...there is also a 15 year old variety, but it's really pricey...about $90 in Cuba.

Of course Cuban rum is not legal to bring back to the states (wink wink), so you will have to drink it all on the ship. But you owe it to yourself to at least get a pint and do just that. Some non-cuban rums that are good are Bacardi 8 and Mount Gay Extra Old IMHO, two good rums, If you have the chance, check out Belize's One Barrel as well. And finaly there is Barbancourt from Haiti, either four year or eight year old. Jimmy Buffet's favorite I'm told ....

I'm usually not a fan of fruit rums, but I love the Guavaberry Rum available only on St Maartin.

Makes wonderful coladas! And who can resist the free samples!

Cruzan rum is yummy....we usually found it for about 5.00 a bottle....cheap but yummy...also Nassau Royale....it is a vanilla
rum that we found in Nassau but I bet you could find it on St M...
it is about 11 a bottle....but worth it....smooth smooth smooth....
and I agree about the Guavaberry...yum yum...had some last night as a matter of fact!!!!

Best I've ever had is Mount Gay rum...I think it's from Barbados (it was a prof from there who introduced me to it, and friends who've been there have brought it back as well). In the U.S., they carry it at Trader Joe's, I think. Soooooo smooth; watch out if you put it in a mixed drink because it goes down far too easily!

In Puerto Rico, I tried Pineapple Rum - think I'll stick with regular rum.

And we loved all of the flavors. And it makes WONDERFUL Rum cakes. I made Pineapple Rum Cakes, and Orange banana rum cakes, and chocolate rum cakes..........they were awesome. I couldn't keep my kids out of them.

(makes me want to go back for rum.............sniff......sniff........sniff)

I bought Cruzan Vanilla Rum on my last cruise, it is yummy. I mix it with some Coke. I also bought some Appleton Rum but haven't tried it yet. :sunny:
