Well, since you are asking...Cuban rum is the best there is... A good brand is HAVANA CLUB, there is the SILVER DRY - clear rum, great for daiquiri's. There is the ANEJO 3 YEAR OLD, that is a nice light amber color, and has some good flavor, great for mojitos, Cuba Libres, and even straight. Not bad. Then, there's ANEJO RESERVA which is getting into the realm of sipping rum - it comes in a dark bottle, and is a syrupy, sweet, rich flavor. There is then an ANEJO RESERVA DE ORO, which is, in my view, a better option than the Anejo Reserva...it is a richer golden color, comes in a clear bottle, and is very, very good, straight, neat or on the rocks. Finally, there is the ANEJO 7 YEAR OLD, which comes in a dark bottle, with a black label, and is the flagship of the regular production line...there is also a 15 year old variety, but it's really pricey...about $90 in Cuba.
Of course Cuban rum is not legal to bring back to the states (wink wink), so you will have to drink it all on the ship. But you owe it to yourself to at least get a pint and do just that. Some non-cuban rums that are good are Bacardi 8 and Mount Gay Extra Old IMHO, two good rums, If you have the chance, check out Belize's One Barrel as well. And finaly there is Barbancourt from Haiti, either four year or eight year old. Jimmy Buffet's favorite I'm told ....
