Researching places to stay for our next trip. Can anyone reccommend a vacation home area close to Disney? I'd be interested to hear peoples experiences w/these homes - good and bad. I'm concerned w/security..are these homes in safe areas? Are they somewhat close to disney? Is the traffic that bad?

Thanks for any info.

We stayed at a villa in the Kissimmee area during our vacation in 2005. We loved the space and private pool, but hated the driving. If you don't know the ins and outs of Florida highways, I recommend getting GPS for your car rental.

Here, in WA state, our free way signs are very simple to understand. If you want to get to SeaTac Airport, you just follow the "To SeaTac" or "Airport" signs...and there are plenty of them. For instance...in Florida, they have "markers", and you need to know which marker is assigned to MCO. Occassionaly you'll see a sign for the airport, but after you get on the highway, all they have are "markers". We found it impossible to get from point A to B without an actual sign that says "MCO or Kissimmee". Just my opinion, but driving in Florida stinks. :lmao:

This might not be exactly what you are looking for, but the Vistana was pretty nice last year. (WE stayed at Vistana, not Vistana Village). It was just off Disney property. The rooms are more like condos than houses, but they are quite reasonable, very clean, full kitchen, multiple tvs, multiple bathrooms, nice pools, AND we had room service (Though you can get a discount if you don't want it), LOTS of room, washer/dryer, balcony with table and nice view of water, jetted tub, close to outlet mall, supermarket, to dining, close to Orchid Word (Okay maybe this one won't appeal to everyone), close to 192

Try using the discounted rate through Deb's WDW website

I prefer onsite myself, but if I were going to go offsite again I'd seriously consider the Vistana. It wasn't the splendor of the Grand Floridian or AKL, but it had lots of pluses. The biggest downside for me was that it was so nice it was hard to get our large family to leave the place, as I'm all about hitting WDW commando style.

Thanks for the info. I did check out Sheraton Vistana Resort and it does look nice - its on my list - thank you for the reccommendation mickeyluv'r. bouncy54 - the driving concerns me - I really don't want to spend alot of time on the road. DH has a GPS for his job - hes named it Edna and she goes wherever he goes - LOL. w

We're still keeping all options open. We love staying onsite but w/a family of 5 (all kids over 3) its difficult to find lodging - well w/o breaking the bank anyway. We're thinking of trying the WL which would have to be the deluxe room so maybe offsetting it w/an offsite resort would work out. We have a while to decide. Thanks again.

Try Windsor Hills: gated community, 2 and 3 bedroom condos, 3 bedroom townhouses with private splash pools and 4 - 6 bedroom pool homes. There's a huge community pool with waterslide, fitness room, mini theatre, games area etc. We've stayed there 3 times, twice in two different townhouses and just got back on the 15th and stayed in a 6 bedroom pool home. Always had good experiences at WH.
Very close to Disney, takes about 5 min to Animal Kingdom and a little more to the rest of the parks. Very easy drive to Disney and there's lots of restaurants etc within 5 min on 192. We have no problems driving in the area and find it very easy.
The Windsor Hills site is www.windsorhillsrent.com
There's also vrbo.com This is the site listings for WH
http://www.vrbo.com/vacation-rentals/usa/florida/central-disney-orlando/kissimmee#2568
There's also www.homeaway.com and many others.
Hope this helps. :)

Thanks for the info. I have visited www.allstarvacationhomes.com and the town houses/condos look wonderful. I've been concentrating on the windsor hills section as it seems closer to Disney then the others but they're all pretty close. Are there any condos that are particulary better located w/in the community - near the pool/community center, etc? Any area you may reccommend? Is there lots of walking or is it fairly close knit?

I'm a little nervous w/3 kids as far as spillling food/drink on the furniture or carpet. Do you know if they charge for little things like that. My kids aren't rowdy but accidents do happen. I think I remember there being a fee that would cover up to $1500 in damage - I"ll have to double check.

I will check out those websites. I can't wait- after the kids go to bed I love spending time checking all these things out. We have a while until we go but the researching is so fun. Thanks again.

Here's a map of WH : http://www.windsor-hills-orlando.com/resort.htm
Condo building #8 overlooks the pool and #7 overlooks the lake. It would only take 5 min to walk to the pool even from the furtherest one. We stayed in one townhouse that bordered the Dry Retention Pond near the back and it only took 5 min to walk to the clubhouse from there.
The playground is where you see the green triangle by where it says Danville St. ( should be Dinvill St.). About a 5 min walk from the townhouses but a little longer from the condos.
You probably can rent directly from the owner for less than allstar. But if you're going to use a company that is a good one.
You can usually get spills wiped up before it stains, we had 4 kids 4 yrs and under with us and didn't have any problems. I've noticed that some owners do have a damage waiver fee of about $50. for this but I've never used one that did. We've rented homes lots of times and I've never had to pay for any damage or stains etc. Have fun looking. :)

I was just showing the kids some of the condos and homes and DS8 could not believe his eyes. I showed him homes w/a game room and their own pool/spa - which was a mistake because now he wants a home w/a game room & pool - lol. Those ones were usually 4 bedrooms or more which we wouldn't need. A 3 bedroom would suit us just fine. This is really food for thought! Thank you some much for the advice & help.

Hey Joanne, you never know, you may be able to get a good deal on a 4 bedroom pool home and everyone could have their own room and game room. There is something to be said about having your own pool right outside your door. It makes it easy to relax after a long day at the parks without having to bundle everyone up and go to the main pool. You can even relax at night by your pool while the kids are watching tv or in bed.
My husband and I stayed in a 5 bedroom home a couple of years ago just because we got a good price. Don't count out the pool home till you get some quotes.

Actually - we are definitely considering it now. When DH got home from work a little while ago I showed him some pics and he said "why not - the owners don't mind if we get a bigger condo/home then we need." Whatever suits our needs the best is what we'll go for. Love the idea of a pool outside the door. I would assume there are childproof locks on that door - I would think there would have to be for insurance purposes plus liability issues. This is getting exciting!

Yes, all the pool homes in WH have an alarm on the patio door leading to the pool area and there's also a safety fence around the pool within the screened patio. You just have to open the gate section when you're using the pool and then clip it when you're not. We were there with our 4 grandkids and their parents. The kids are 4ys old and younger and we were really glad for both safety measures.
If anyone opens the patio door without pushing the button which is about 6 ft high near the top of the patio door a LOUD alarm goes off. (Pushing the button will stop it.) So every time you go out the door you have to first push in on the button and then you have about 20 seconds to shut the door before the alarm will sound again. Same routine when you come in from the pool area. Push button first then open door and close it within 20 seconds.
The first few times we forgot to press it but after that we got used to it and did it automatically.
Having the game room was also good for entertaining the kids and their parents. :thumbsup2

We just got back from 10 days in a 5 bedroom pool home in Formosa Garden Estates. There was only 4 of us. It was so nice! The owners were great, very nice people and they gave us an incredible price. The pool was the highlite! It was 30 X 17 and had a mickey baby pool and the best jacuzzi ever! The management company was great. It was an very short 2-3 mile drive to WDW and was such an easy drive. Never had any traffic. The neighborhood was very safe and quiet. Here are a couple of pictures. The house was huge with really high ceilings. The master suite was awesome. Very big the bathroom was really great. Let me know if you want more info.

Thats great. I'm not too sure who would be more excited about the game room - my kids or my DH! Heck me too. Thanks again for all your help.

Thank you for taking the time to post those pics - there beautiful! I love the pool. I remember seeing a home (I think I've looked at so many) w/the mickey pool on www.allstarvacations.com. I'm glad to read Formosa Gardens was a good location - its so hard to tell by the maps. It looks like its so close to World Drive. Thank you again - I'll go back and see if I can find it again.

What are the rules on making ADRs at the parks & disney hotels? Is it still 180 days out? I'd just have to call 180 days exactly from the day I want the ADR for every ADR. I can't do all the ADRs for our vacation in one call - right?

Thanks again all for the info.

hinodis: I found the house in Fomosa Gardens - did you use the vrbo.com website - it takes me to another website called character corners? Thanks for any info.

Thank you for the recommendations mainebound & CDN PrinceCharming - looks like tonight will be another night (after the kids go to bed) looking at rental homes. I love it! Last night I spend 3 hours online and when I saw the time I couldn't believe it. It really is addicting. I keep thinking to myself - whats the catch? These houses are gorgeous and close to disney. The price is right too. We spent 7 nights at the Poly in October for $385 per night - whats that $2695 w/o tax. The money we could save & the space! Our own pool!

mainebound - I live near Stephen King as well - not kidding. I grew up in Bangor and live in Brewer now. What a small world after all. Oh no - I'll be singing that all night.

Thanks again.
