Hi! My chef husband and I are foodies, but often find it difficult to eat out because we follow a vegan diet. On vacation it may possibly slip to a vegetarian diet if we can't find adequate vegan food though. We know that we need to plan ahead and research places to eat for our Disney trip. The Boma dinner buffet has already won us over! Can anybody suggest other places with vegan/vegetarian options for me to look into? I'm quite overwhelmed with all of the Disney dining choices!

If you see restaurant with a type of food you like give them a call. Ask to speak to the chef. DH was a chef at several restaurants in WDW and they always have options for vegetarian and vegan guests - and they appreciate the head's up so they can give you better options.

Just make sure to call them in advance and let them know when you are going. If it is a last minute thing just ask to speak to the chef when you get to the restaurant - but calling ahead will get you the best selection!

Teppan Edo at Japan (Epcot) has a fabulous veggie dish that can be made vegan BUT they also cook meat in front of you too (although the veggies are cooked first). At other restaurants, I would call ahead about having a special meal made. If you do want to do vegetarian there are many items, and at most places you won't need to make special arrangements in advance.

I would rather go to Tokyo Dining, personally, and get some edamame, sushi and tempura. Veggies on a hibachi grill are generally pretty boring and oily.

Any sit-down restaurant should cater to vegans. Another good veggie-friendly buffet is Crystal Palace in MK; it's a character meal with Pooh and friends. Tusker House in Animal Kingdom is said to be Boma light. Brown Derby in MGM has a very nice vegan meal.

Counter service is hit-and-miss for availability; they cannot be very flexible, apart from leaving cheese off the soy burger. Especially in Animal Kingdom, where apparently the point is to eat our animal friends. The only vegan option there is the veggie burger at Restaurantosaurus. Columbia Harbour House in MK has a veggie sandwich (vegan without the slaw) and a vegan chili, Pecos Bill and Cosmic Ray's have veggie burgers, and Cosmic Ray's also has a wrap, but I'm not sure of its contents. Tangierine Cafe in Epcot has several options that should be vegan (lentil salad has mayo, I believe), as well as Sunshine Seasons. In the Studios, there's a veggie cheeseburger and possibly the sandwich at Backlot Express could do with some omissions. There's also a veggie pita at Starring Rolls, but I've never had it.

A favorite Vegan Blogger of mine went to Disney earlier this year and blogged all her eating :)

Ruby Red Vegan check out the entries from about March 24th to April 12th.

The Apple stuffed pretzels at Min & Bill's are Vegan that surprised me and made me very happy :) From her blogs it seems the chefs are very accomodating.

This is really good information, Laura! I am going to pass it along to my mom, who is wondering about what CS she can eat at the parks (as a vegetarian). Constantly having a salad or frozen yogurt can get old pretty quick.

My thanks goes out to all of you! I think that I'm already getting a better idea of our options. I have jotted down all of the suggestions and links and will look at the menus. I'm so happy to hear that I may be able to call some places to request vegan meals ahead of time as well.

Ruby Red Vegan...oh no...another vegan blog to become obsessed with! :)

I'm not a vegan, but do eat vegetarian quite a bit. I was very impressed with California Grill--you can usually find lots of options on the menu. I'm sure if you chat with the chefs they will really make something special. :goodvibes

There are many threads on the Dining Review board that include one or more vegan or vegetarian guests, but this is one of the best:
Vegan and Vegetarian Dining Reviews! (Sept. 27 – Oct. 1) With LOTS of pictures! :thumbsup2

Even though this is from a year ago, it doesn't matter. You get a wonderful view of what's available or what the TS chefs can do. From what I could tell, this couple did not call ahead either.
