Hi all!

So we've basically just decided that we are going to go back to the happiest place on earth hopefully for August this year however we're a bit shocked at how expensive it is coming out to get flights and stay on resort?
To try and get the costs down we are thinking it might be an idea to stay off resort this time.

Can anyone recommend any decent hotels or villas even? There is myself, hubby and our 8yr old.

Also, what's it like going at the end of August time? We've stayed in April and October in the past and both times were perfect!

Thank you x

Depends how far you want to stay off resort? I stay at international drive, my hotel offers free transportation to Disney but takes up to an hour to get there? I never really timed my journey, but was perfect for me because universal/Seaworld/etc was close by, if your only doing Disney then I would defo recommend closer

Thanks Kizzie.

Ideally we would prefer to be closer to Disney as we'll want to do the parks most days however I know International drive is huge isn't it? We would hire a car but hubby is a pain in the *** for moaning about driving too far so closer would probs be better yes.

Our fave place just now is Wyndham Bonnet Creek. It's just as close to Disney parks as the onsite resorts. http://www.wyndhambonnetcreek.com/
We paid around £70/nt for a 2 bed apartment. Although with poor exchange that will be more now.
Last time I used Ken & Denise at Vacationupgrades.com

We stayed at the Buena Vista Palace which was really nice. It's really close to Disney as its next to DTD.

We've stayed in the Homewood Suites on International Drive. They have a free shuttle to WDW and SeaWorld is pretty handy. When we stayed they offered a free breakfast and happy hour every evening!

We normally stay in and around the 192/World Drive intersection as its a quick fire route into WDW, but also close enough to the I4 for Universal. The Ramada Gateway and the Maingate Resort Suites & Spa (may have changed names since October!) I would recommend. They don't always look wonderful on the outside, but they're fairly nice on the inside!

I guess it depends on what you will use the room for. For us its literally crashing into bed after a full day in the parks before we go back and do it all again. So we don't see the point in spending a huge amount for a hotel we wont be in apart from when our eyes are closed!

For comfortable budget, the Radisson at Celebration isn't bad, and is just across the I4 from World Drive.

Thats because the buses from hotels often stop at a number of hotels, can't go as fast as a car.

Some hotels you have to book your seat on the bus each morning which is a massive pain.

A few years ago we stayed at Sheraton Vistana Villages Resort Villas, southern end of International Drive, near to Premium Outlet Vineland. Lovely accommodation and approx 15 mins drive to Disney; it is timeshare so you do have to refuse the "free breakfast" offer a few times, when they phone you, unless of course you want to buy a timeshare!

We rented one of these two properties for 2 weeks, and had the best Florida holiday ever. Super close,to the parks and tons of other amenities, and cheaper than most hotels.

Hi have you stayed on site before?
I've done onsite many times, and idrive many many times as a child to teen and then a few days as an adult and have not liked it as much as onsite,
However trips are getting ridiculous and so I was thinking of a villa,
I wanted to know what made it the best trip for you, and had you stayed onsite as then I can ask you how it compared.

Also how far was it to the parks? I found the site for these villas, a little hard to use, so I've emailed them, but any info you have would be great on how far away etc they are.
I'm sure my 3 boys would love the space.
Thanks and sorry for all the questions.

Looks like the Compass Bay Community is between the 530, 535 and 417 roads. https://www.google.co.uk/maps/search/compass+bay+orlando/@28.3312088,-81.5266933,14.25z

Magic Kingdom being the furthermost park from it is 18 Mins away

I agree with Wyndham Bonnet Creek. We used to live in Tampa and occasionally we would choose to stay the weekend versus just do a day trip and we always found great deals at Bonnet Creek. The location is really great and close to the parks, you can't beat it. They have great pools and restaurants at most of the towers so you can do a pool day/afternoon if you don't want to go to the parks. The only downside is that you don't get the same Disney transportation you do onsite. I can't speak for Bonnet Creek's transportation service because we had APs and parked for free at the parks.

If you aren't locked in on dates you should keep an eye on Dave's DVC dedicated reservations. They are people who have booked their DVC stay but can't use it so he rents it out and you can grab it at a very discounted price. You just have to go the dates they originally booked. I would suggest normal DVC rental but they recommend booking that 8 months out so inventory would be very limited at this point but you can try! It saves a lot of money over booking directly through Disney. We don't live in FL anymore and that is how we book our stays now.

Hi, Jon84 is correct on location. The longest we were in the car from leaving the driveway to parking was 20 minutes. We had a SatNav with us, but even without it, it's like 3 minutes to World Centre Drive, so signs are easy to follow from there. There's a Walmart a minute or two down the road, tons of restaurants within minutes, not far from the Outlet malls (Orlando Premium Outlets) and really close to the Disney Property.

Total honestly we've not stayed on property before. We are in the middle of planning our next trip for 2018 and that will likely be our only on property trip. Much as I love the idea of the Disney bubble I just can't justify the cost when a big 3 bedroom house can cost half of a two bedded room. We have previously stayed at the Hilton Grand Vacations Tuscany Villas just off I-Drive, a similar distance, so we do have Villa experience, just not on property.

The things that made this trip for us, while it wasn't on the property it was close. We could hop into the car and be there quickly. We could hop between parks easily and quicker with the car than by sticking to transportation (even if we stay on property we will continue to rent a car). I struggle with mobility, so while I don't use a wheelchair or scooter in every day life I need one at Disney. At the end of a long Disney day where I'm completely trashed driving home and pulling up into our own driveway and walking a few steps into the house was worth its weight in gold. Once we were 'home' we were right there. No 20 minutes standing in queues for transportation, no 20 minute walk through the complex from either their parking area/bus drop-off/monorail drop (depending on resort). Staying at any hotel (property or not) still can mean a long trek to the room even after you arrive.

Space! Even though there were only two of us (we did have a local friend come and stay for a couple of nights, so that was also a bonus), having the space to spread out was wonderful. While we are looking forward to Disney bubble, we are not looking forward to keeping all of our stuff in one room again. If you have kids, the fact everyone could have their own room (OK, two, wild need to share unless one used the pull-out) could be a big hit.

Our trip was 14 nights, so that did contribute to the 'perfectness' of the trip, we also included two Universal days and a Sea World day. Being off property made it a few minutes closer to both of those.

They really are central to a lot. I actually found them originally on Holidaylettings.co.uk. The email through his personal website wasn't working properly so eventually I contacted him through holiday lettings. His responses once he got the contact were very quick. If you don't hear from him soon let me know and I'll get his contact info for you.

Reading the reviews of his property on the holiday lettings site (through trip adviser) sold me on the properties and him as an owner. He also has them listed on a couple of other letting sites, and each one had a little bit of different information so I was able to piece together where it was specifically and look at the surrounding amenities. I worried until we arrived about whether we might have made a mistake, but the second we arrived we knew we did the right thing.

The management company is easy to contact and were helpful when a small need arose.

So,our next trip will be our 'dream' on property trip, and after that we'll be back to off-site and if he's still renting we would rent with him again.

If you want more info or have other specific questions please feel free to PM and I will answer them as best as I can :)

Edit to add:
Here's some other links where he has the properties listed which might give you some more info

https://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p8052261 - seasons property
https://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/accommodation/p8038426 -Harvest property

It looks like he's not longer advertising with Holiday Lettings/Trip Advisor, which means all,of those reviews are gone too :(. I'll have to re-post my review with the other advertising site.

It is a pretty good location. I've stayed at the Radisson at Celebration which is essentially at the end of World Drive. Some of the shops on the road between the Radisson and Compass Bay are those random i-Drive Style tourist places, but theres some good stuff too. It's not gonna take long, especially if you use the Osceola Parkway, to get to World Drive, it's a wide road with little traffic that takes you past the Kissimee Old Town.

If I had a family on our trips it would certainly be a place to look out for :)

Another vote for Bonnet Creek. We have stayed 8 times. I booked my flight today, finally, for August so hopefully will be staying for 22 nights from 7th. Can't wait. It's like a home from home for us. Fantastic resort.
