Recommend hotels near Universal Hollywood

We are going to drive up for Fan Fest nights on May 17th. I need to book a room. The Sheraton and Hilton are WAY to expensive now (over $1000/night) so I need to find a less expensive place to stay. I am down in the San Diego area and don't know that area well. I would like to stay near Universal and somewhere safe and clean.
Any recommendations?

How close are you looking to stay? I recently stayed at The Garland which isn't too far away and a really nice hotel. I was a solo traveller and it felt safe and very clean. It was priced a little higher than others nearer the city but may be cheaper than the Hilton and Sheraton! They have a free trolley that runs every hour to Universal which is really handy.
