This year for Christmas, I want to make some of those gifts in jars. I got some last year and they were so cute and useful - not to mention tasty! Does anybody have any recipes?? What about ways that I can fix them up to make them cute? Last year I got one with hot chocolate mix and one with chocolate chip cookies. Can anybody give me any original ideas??

I have a great recipe for peppermint hot cocoa that my nieces and nephews ask for every year. I'll try to find it and post it here. It makes more than enough to fill a jar.

Meriweather -- would you please post your recipes for the scones and hot buttered rum? I'm doing gifts in a jar as well this year and they sound good.

I got mine off recipegoldmine last year, too. I agree that they are useful and my daughter and I had fun putting them together.

The peppermint cocoa sounds yummy. That might make a great teacher gift with a mug. Hmmm. I'll be watching for that one! Thanks.

I'm breathing a sigh of relief. When I went to look for my recipe, I remembered that I couldn't find it last year so had to recreate it from memory and lots of taste tests. I finally found some chicken scratch on a post-it:

Peppermint hot cocoa

31/2 cups dry, powdered milk
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup powdered creamer
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa

Apparently I didn't write down the measurements for the peppermint. What I do is double bag a few candy canes in Ziploc, then smash them to a powder with a rubber mallet. It usually ends up being about the equivalent of about a quarter of the sandwich size bag if I remember correctly. You do end up with a few small chunks of candy cane, but they dissolve in the cocoa. You can taste test until you get the amount you like.

Use 1/3 cup of mix for every 6 ounces of hot water.

Blueberry Scones 1

Recipe By :Bonni
Serving Size : 0 Preparation Time :0:00
Categories : Jar

Amount Measure Ingredient -- Preparation Method
-------- ------------ --------------------------------
2 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 cup vanilla sugar*
1/4 cup nonfat dry milk powder
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon dried lemon peel
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/3 cup shortening
1 cup dried blueberries

Stir together flour, sugar, milk powder, baking powder, lemon peel, and salt.
Cut in shortening using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Stir in berries.
Layer into a 1-quart canning jar, tapping gently on the counter between layers to settle before adding
the next. Add additional dried blueberries to fill in small gaps if necessary.
Store at room temperature for up to 6 weeks, or freeze for up to 6 months.

GIFT TAG DIRECTIONS:
Place jar contents in a large mixing bowl. Add 1 beaten egg and 1/4 cup water. Stir just until moistened.
Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and quickly knead gently for 12 to 15 strokes or until nearly
smooth.
Pat to 1/2-inch thickness. Cut into desired shape and place 1 inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet.
Brush with milk.
Bake at 400° for 12-15 minutes or until golden.
Transfer to a rack to cool slightly and serve warm.

NOTES : *To make vanilla sugar, fill a 1 quart jar with sugar. Split a
vanilla bean in half lengthwise and add both halves to the sugar. Flavor
gets better after a couple of weeks, and it will keep as long as regular
sugar.

Thanks for the recipes!

Today I came across this recipe that I think would lend itself very easily to a jar gift. Wouldn't these be great with maple syrup?

Gingerbread Pancakes

1 cup all-purpose flour
1 T sugar
1 t baking powder
1 t ground ginger
1/2 t salt
1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t cinnamon
Dash of ground cloves
2 T molasses
1 T vegetable oil
1 cup buttermilk
1 egg, lightly beaten

In a large bowl, combine all the dry ingredients. In a msall bowl, whisk the molasses, oil, buttermilk, and egg. Slowly pour the liquid mixtureinto the flour mixture and stir until uniform. Lightly grease a griddle or pan over medium-low heat and cook the pancakes for about 3 minutes on each side. Makes 6 medium pancakes.
