I am thinking about submitting a recipe into "Emerils Say Cheese Contest" and have a question. If you had a recipe that you got online (I was looking for ideas awhile back) and you took that recipe and added ingredients, deleted ingredients, changed quantities - would you consider it your own recipe? The original was more a concept and I tweaked it to fit our tastes. The rules specify that it has to be an original and I altered the original so is it now my original?

I don't know. I would say that if you changed over 50% of the recipe then yes it is yours but if you only changed one or two things and decreased amounts by a tsp then I would say no it's not yours but again I don't know the real answer to this. Good luck finding your answer and if you do submit I hope you win.

You have to make major changes to submit...not just changing 1/2 cup of grated cheese to 1/4 cup.

I was once a finalist in a major recipe contest and you had to sign an afidavit stating that it is your original recipe.

Mine was my lasagne recipe...except I deleted the pasta, added a cheesy spinach layer and put it in a pie shell....major change.

I am by no means an expert, but here's my take. I think in order to make it an original, you have to change it to the extent that it is no longer recognized as the original original.

I would also say that since you can trace your inspiration back to a specific recipe, it isn't right to tweak it and call it an original.

I mean if you are making a pie and add more sugar than the recipe called for, then I would say no, it is not original.

If you were making a pie and instead of blueberries you used huckleberries, then I would say it was original.

I wonder if you googled the issue and looked at some sites like the Pilsbury bake-off, you could get some more examples and ideas of what is considered original.

Original recipe:
1 pound white mushrooms
2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
6 ounces bulk Italian sausage
3 green onions, sliced (about 1/2 cup) *omitted
1 teaspoon chopped garlic
1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1/2 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
1/4 cup Parmesan cheese, grated

My recipe:
¼ cup Olive Oil
1 pound fresh white mushrooms
1 pound Hot sausage *changed
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon red pepper flakes *added
½ cup mozzarella shredded cheese
½ cup Parmesan shredded cheese
¼ cup feta cheese *added
