You got me curious, so I did a search on Google. I should have done that before posting earlier. I was grossed out - most of the recipes out there call for mayo - YUCK! LOL I even hate it when they ask me at the deli if I want oil or mayo on my hoagie at the deli!
Anyway, there are two basic recipes out there:
Hoagie Dip
1/4 pound Genoa salami, sliced thin
1/4 pound cappacola ham, sliced thin
1/4 pound peppered ham, sliced thin
1/4 pound provolone cheese, sliced thin
1/4-1/2 medium onion, chopped fine
1/4 head lettuce, shredded
1/2 cup mayonnaise
2 Tbl oregano
4 plum tomatoes, seeded
Cut everything into very small pieces. Mix all ingredients in large mixing bowl. Put in a bread bowl (pumpernickel makes a nice contrast). Arrange 1/2 " thick slices of french bread around the bread bowl. Spread the dip on the french bread. (NOTE: regular ham may be used in place of the peppered ham. Use more mayonnaise to taste.)
NOTE: I saw one recipe that called for a couple of jalepeno or pepperocini peppers chopped fine.
AND
Hoagie Dip
1/2 lb. of Provolone cheese (deli sliced)
1/2 lb. of Genoa Salami (deli sliced)
1/2 lb. of Capicolla Ham (deli sliced)
1 medium size tomato
1 medium size onion
vegetable oil
Italian seasonings (basil, oregano & thyme)
pepper
Tallarico's Hot Hoagie Spread (OPTIONAL)
loaf of French bread or sourdough bread or you can use the mini rye bread if they have it in your area.
Chop the tomato & onion, put in large bowl. Cut cheese, salami & ham into small pieces. Add some Italian seasoning & pepper. Add about a tablespoon or 2 of the vegetable oil. Mix ingredients together. Use just enough oil so that it mixes in with all the ingredients. Add the Tallarico's hoagie spread if you like a little bite....it adds a sweet/spicy taste. (look for it in the same aisle as the jarred hot peppers) Cover and refrigerate. Make this a few hours ahead of time so it gives the flavors time to blend. Cut the bread into small pieces (about 1/4-1/2 inch thick, about 2 inches in width.....just big enough to hold a scoop of the hoagie spread) On a large tray, arrange the bread pieces around the outside, place a bowl of the hoagie dip (with a spoon) in the middle and serve.
