Ok, here is my story. The week between Christmas and New Year's 2007 I went to a place to get my eyes checked, new glasses and new contacts. Starting in January I was loosing anywhere from 1-4 lbs. a week. In mid-March my eyes started giving me trouble. I was always rubbing them. It got to the point that I could see better without my contacts.

April 19 I finally got my eyes checked at another place. The first place didn't even seem concerned that I was having problems reading. I had gone to eye place #2 two and a half years ago and was extremely impressed with the service there. I went to the first eyeplace because I had a coupon.

The lady at place #2 said that said that my eyes weren't unhealthy nor were the healthy. She recommeded that I get bloodwork done. April 30 I had a Dr. appointment. Well, last Monday or Tuesday the Dr. office called to say that I had Type 2 diabetes and where did I want the script called into. No help in education or diet. He doesn't even have me testing my blood at home.

I know not to drink soda or to eat candy or alot of carbs. I was thinking that I should make an appointment with the on grocery chain here that has a nutritionist and see if she can help me.

Is there anyone out there who can guide me a little. The diabetes website is too much of a help.

Personally I do not get the cavalier attitude of your doctor's office...I would think that you should be monitoring yourself at home with diet and testing your blood and certainly would be questioning this doctor's attitude.

Right now, I am thinking I would ask to see a specialist who works with diabetes and I certainly would be expecting a referral if your own doctor does not want to guide you through this.

One of my friends is a wealth of knowledge on this subject but she is away in WDW.. When she gets back, I will direct her over to this thread..

2 1/2 yrs ago I found out I was Type 1 - insulin dependent; however, most everybody in my family is diabetic (both types) so I already knew what to expect. Find yourself a new doctor, endocrinologist if at all possible.

Everything has some type of sugar or converts to sugar in the body (all fruits, veggies, starches, fried foods, meats, breads, etc.) Most diabetic diets state to limit the food intake per meal as in eat 1/2 cup to a cup of fruits/veggies and usually 4 to 8 ozs of fish or meat at each meal and limit the amount of bread (usually 1 slice). Most diabetic books teach the same thing in controlling the amt. of food, limiting milks and breads and starches. Read Sugarbusters (basically stay away from white things, white bread, white rice, pastas - things that are processed with bleach) and stick to things made with wheat or whole grain.

Type 2 means that your pancrease is still producing insulin for your body but just not enough to keep your blood sugar in line so you'll be placed on pills. I haven't seen a doctor yet (until yours) that didn't tell a diabetic to check his blood sugars. A number of type 2s after many years graduate from the pills into having to take insulin and the only way to know that is test the A1c levels every so many months. Additionally, you also need to watch how the pills effect your body as many people begin to have kidney problems while on the pills so in the future you may occasionally want to have checkups with a Nephrologist. Do some basic research online, make a few lifestyle changes and get yourself a new doctor and you will be fine. Don't forget that you are only human and having a piece of cake every now and then isn't going to kill you.

I did call my Dr. yesterday to see why I wasn't checking my blood sugar level. From what they said, they're not going to have me check my blood sugar for the moment. I have to go back in July and they'll redo the blood tests. After the results are in, I may need to check my blood sugar.
