Has anyone done a recent renewal of their passport? I am trying to decide if their estimate of four weeks is accurate, or if I need to suck it up and pay almost double for expedited, which has a three-week delivery. Thanks so much for any insight.

My sister and father applied for their's on 5/20 and got them in the mail yesterday. They went to the local Post Office to apply.

I agree with the previous poster - Applied on 5/9 (expedited, though) and it was processed in one day, mailed on 5/14, and delivered on 5/17 ...

... To someone else's house.

10 days, tons of phone calls to the USPS and the Passport agency, one cancelled and re-issued passport later, the first passport showed up at my door with a note - "hope this is what you're looking for" - and a scribbled out part on the envelope that looks like it says "wrong address".

Plan for failure!

What I love is that DD got a new passport and I got a renewal. Hers was tagged as delivered at 11:33 am on 5/17. Mine was tagged as delivered at 12:34 pm on 5/17. And the post office wouldn't take responsibility for misdelivered mail!?!?!?!?!

Don't pay to expidite. My passport as well as the passports for both kids took less than two weeks. We applied at the local court house.

Do you have to wait until a certain point to renew passports? I think DH's and mine expire in a couple years and we are cruising next year. I thought maybe we'd just go ahead and renew but i didn't know if you had to wait until you were in a certain 'window' of time of the other one expiring.

I did a renewal early May 2008, it was returned within 7 days via priority mail. I did not request or pay for expedited service. The old passport was also returned under seperate cover. State Dept seems to be working very smoothly these days.
Downloaded the forms from the website and mailed them via regular mail to the renewal center with a money order enclosed.

I would research that issue more, but I thought I had read somewhere that the passport can't be less than six months from its expiration date. Hope I remember that right! :)

My wife and I renewed our passports last month. I sent the applications priority mail with delivery confirmation on a Saturday and received the passports the following Saturday.

Regarding when to renew, if you have less than six months on a passport some officials will have an issue with that. If the passport is going to expire within a year I would renew it, but if you have more than a year on the passport then I would just wait since there really is not an inconvenience issue when renewing by mail.

We got our DDs passport less than 2 weeks after applying at the post office. Guess there's not much to look into for a 15mo old :lmao:

Some countries have restrictions like they will not accept a passport that is within 6mo of expiring or something. You can renew any time, though I'd wait till a few months before your cruise. I figure if I wait till closer to expiration, every time, I save a bit of money in the long run :)

Applied for renewal in end of January. Took just about three and a half weeks to get it back from when I mailed it in.
