Hi. I recently had gastric bypass surgery and am heading down to WDW in November. Are there any suggestions/hints/tricks that for manuevering the various menus? Thanks.

I am pretty sure if you have a letter on your DR letter head stating the recent surgery you would be able to order off the childrens menu and/or pay a childs price at the buffets.

Just have fun and play it by ear.

That's actually not true about paying children's prices at fixed price restaurants. They charge 100% by age with no exceptions. At non-fixed price restaurants you should be able to order what you'd like including just ordering a side or an appetizer or splitting meals (much better food than buying kids meals since kids meals are not the types of foods you want after GB surgery).

Since you posted this on the dining plan forum I'm assuming you want specifics for how to work the dining plan after GB surgery.

I would plan to split meals. At CS locations you most likely will be able to get a side instead of dessert making it even easier to split meals. At CS locations you can also use snack credits to order a side rather than a meal. At TS locations, the restaurants that are owned by Disney and are not fixed price will also allow you to split meals though they won't do the side instead of dessert I don't believe. Some non-Disney owned restaurants will allow you to split when using the dining plan but some won't so be sure to ask. You could always pay OOP for something small like a soup and then nibble off somebody else's plate at TS locations. At fixed price locations, you'll be using a credit regardless of how much you eat.

Nope, they do not care about this at WDW. I have my card and I have to tell you be prepared is the best advise I can give you. Bring protein supplements with you. I carry single serve shake packets with me as well as a few bars in my larger bag. There are lots of salads to choose from, soups work well too. I also get chicken sandwiches or burgers and deconstruct them only eating the protein. It can be done and I am on year three after sx but WDW does not make it easy.

I had gbs 2009. (lost 140 lbs) and have been to wdw each Xmas week since and used ddp each visit.
Really had no problem...shared some cs meals with DH; often ordered app as entree; many TS have wonderful no sugar added desserts(still cant do sugar) and even cheesecakes at BW bakery;I do bring protein bars and mixes; we are going back this year too.
good luck....best decision of my life

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate your feedback!!!!! FYI, I agree that this surgery was the best decision I've ever made!!!!!

I haven't had a bypass, but my DH and I are trying to change our lifestyle and lose weight by portion control. These tips are helpful for all of us that are discovering just how much we actually eat!
I really like the tip about sharing the CS meals! Some of those portions are HUGE!

I had Lap-band surgery and used to carry my card stating this person has WLS and can't eat more than 4 oz. The only place at WDW that has given me an issue was Chef Mickey's. I had to pay the adult price there. Crystal Palace and 'Ohana never gave me a problem. Sharing meals is going to be the best way.....eat the protein, not the breads and pasta. I went to WDW while I was on my pre-op diet and managed to lose 2 pounds while there for 8 nights. The heat helped curb my appetite, too. Good luck!

My best friend just ate a portion of my meal. :) it worked fine. I wouldn't count on appetizers. They all seemed to be high fat.

I'm worried about the same thing. I'll be over three years out from surgery by the time I go. I hate wasting food but I've learned that it's better to throw it away then use my body as the garbage can. Just try to share meals whenever possible and throw away the left overs when needed.

I had my bypass in 2/2010 and went to WDW with DDP last August with DH, DD, DN. We did not go to any buffets....they charge by the person. We had some wonderful TS meals at Artist Pointe, Chefs of France, Rose and Crown...I shared all my TS meals with DH, no problem. However at Tony's Town Square they would not let me share with the DDP. If we had paid cash for all of us, no problem. Shared all the CS meals. We stayed at FW so we had a kitchen for my protein shake every morning. GBP best thing ever! DH had it this past May, so we will each share with DS and DD this year!:cool2:
