Recent experiences using debit cards...

I have searched the boards and google, but all information I have found is outdated.

Has anyone used a debit card through Budget or Alamo recently? I know using a debit card is ill advised, but it is my only option.

Just wanting to know your experience. How much of a hold was placed? Did using a debit card cause any unusual difficulties or waiting?

I never had a problem with Alamo, last month was Thrifty who held $250 until I returned it, then the $122.12 for 8.2 days, blue chip member skip the counter pick up. That was worth the hold to skip the counter.
I think Enterprise will still take Debit too.

I'd go with Alamo as long as you have proof of round trip plane ticket they are charge the amount of rental no additional holds

It can be round trip ticket for any mode of transportation. Train, plane, bus. ship.

Alamo has their debit card policy on their website. I would assume the same for budget. Look under payment options on each site.

I just did this last Friday at Alamo. I just had to show them my return flight info. It was easy as could be.

We did this with Budget last March. We did a great pre pay rate 2 days before we flew. Then when we got there, they took our Visa debit and put a $100 hold on it. When we returned the car asked them about it, said it would be credited back. It did take lots of phone calls and 3 months later before they did reimburse it. Apparently with the debit Visa they didn't know where they were depositing it back to. I had to call the bank, call budget, call the bank, and so on. Finally the bank received notice and they returned it. Now we are Canadian so it could have just been because it was a CDN bank.
