Recent experience with Lyft/Uber from airport to port?

Hello friends!

We're staying overnight near MCO because of a late flight and then traveling to the port the next day for our cruise. Is it irresponsible to think Uber/Lyft will be sufficient to get to the ports in time? I didn't know how easy it is to get a ride through ride-share because of the distance. Should I book a car service or a rental? Uber/Lyft would certainly be cheaper...I appreciate any insight!

Why not just book the official Disney transportation?

And UberX would cost you about $70. Disney transportation would cost you $39 per person. Worth the difference IMO.

Whats the official transportation from MCO to port? We’re also staying overnight at Orlando (the Hyatt there) and going to port in the morning and when i called the Hyatt this morning to find out about transportation options, she just mentioned Uber or Lyft and that’s it. I was just looking at private car services.

Airport Transfers

Ground transfers between Orlando International Airport and Port Canaveral are available for purchase. Airport transfers are available on embarkation and debarkation days only, for $39 per Guest. We recommend calling (800) 951-3532 to add ground transfers in advance, as only a limited number may be available for purchase upon arrival. Please be prepared to provide your inbound and outbound flight details. Private transportation options are also available.

If you have booked a stay before your cruise directly at the Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport and purchased transfers from the airport to the port, please call and let us know so we can ensure your transportation experience is seamless.

If you've purchased transfers, be sure to collect your luggage at baggage claim upon arrival at Orlando International Airport. Then proceed directly to Side B, Level 1 – Ground Transportation.

Ah I missed that thanks! It’s hard because I’m planning the WDW stuff and my in laws booked the cruise part. I already booked my boarding time though—wonder if that means I should stick to getting my own way. What would be the specific benefit of Disney transport in terms of quality/service, out of curiosity?

For my family, it's a no-brainer. I have three kids and two of them would need car seats in an Uber, so that's not really an option for us at all. All of the private transportation options require us to buy some kind of premium/large vehicle, so the cost ends up being much cheaper to use the Disney bus.

I've heard some other things like "when you arrive on Disney transportation, your PAT doesn't matter and you can go right into the terminal," or "when you arrive on Disney transportation, the online check-in will let you have your pick of PATs," but I don't know how true of any that is.

It doesn't really apply if you're staying overnight the night before or if you have WDW planned for before or after, but I also like that you can link your flight information so that if there are any problems or delays with the flights, DCL is automatically aware of them.

You know, the first DCL I did way back when (20+ years) was a true land and sea package from Disney. 4 Days at the parks followed by 3 on the ship. Basically I gave my bags to the airline at home during check in, and did not have to touch them / carry them again until I picked them up at the home airport baggage claim. It was AWESOME! They magically appeared in our resort room, and then later our state room. Of course this included transport to and from the ship. To and from the airport. All included!

This was Disney at their finest. They really need to get that magic back rather than trying everything they can to appease their greedy stock holders! New CEO = 💩

I am really very surprised that the Hyatt didn't mention DCL transfers as an option. Yes, you would have to contact DCL to book them but the Hyatt and DCL transfers have had a relationship for years. We were even picked up AT THE HYATT ENTRANCE once when we stayed there and had transfers. There was a different bus pick up for people not staying at the Hyatt (where the now defunct Magical Express was). Do not know if pick up at the Hyatt itself is still happening.

DCL did have (until the covid shutdown) the Onboard Airline Check In policy where if you were on certain domestic airlines and met time parameters you could put your bags in the hall the night before the cruise ended and you wouldn't see them again until your home airport. Wish they would start that up again.

I clearly remember the Maiden Voyage of the Magic with our land/sea. Transfers to the hotel...we stayed at the Polynesian and then they took us to the ship and then back to the airport when cruise was over.

I was also surprised she had no real info! I had assumed those logistics would be super common. She said in the past, the concierge would've been able to point me to my options but they haven't had a concierge in two years 😬

Yes, I would guess some people stay at the Hyatt every single cruise!

There's just three of us, and our kiddo is an almost teen so no car seat needs. I think DCL transportation would be great but looks like it would be $117 for the three of us? Not terrible but almost comparable with a private service, which was $140 through Tiffany Town Cars.

Can I ask you, Cap, how the timing worked with the official transportation? I’ve heard pick ups at resorts are late so was unsure what time pick up works from the airport.

Yeah I think you're right at the line. Two people would make the DCL transportation cheaper, but four people would mean you probably wouldn't fit in a normal car. Three might be the only number where I'd do the private service.

I've only done it out of Miami, so I can't speak directly to MCO, but I assume it's the same. The buses just kept coming. They'd wait near baggage claim and gather a bunch of people, then take that group to the bus once it got big enough. Then a new person would go gather the next group of people at baggage claim to load the next bus. Buses kept coming, left when they were full, and then a new empty bus would take its place.

I actually think that sounds nice, since I'm not sure what time we'd like to head out in the morning. I'm nervous we'll be super tired and scheduling a car service that we may sleep through sounds stressful, ha!
