We sailed at the beginning of this year and when we were at Edge signing up our 13 yr old, the counselor asked how old my younger son was and told us 10 year olds were allowed in Edge with a parent's permission. I ended up deciding to keep him in the Lab during that sailing but we are sailing again next month, 2 weeks prior to his 11th birthday. Do they still allow 10 year olds in Edge or have they gotten strict on the age limits? He is hoping he would be allowed but I told him I wasn't sure what the current policy was.

We sailed in August with our 10 year-old DS. We asked if he could be allowed in the Edge and they said they had plenty of room, so we just had to sign the form for him and he was good to go.

It can vary by cruise depending on how many 11-14 yr olds are on that particular sailing. But that said, 2 weeks prior to the birthday is probably going to be allowed to age-up. You'll have to ask onboard, though, so prepare him that there's a chance he'll need to do the Lab.

Enjoy your cruise!

My kids got in starting at age 10 no problem. On one cruise my youngest turn 10 on the second day of the cruise so he had to wait until the second day to sign the waiver. One of the counselors told me that there are a couple of cruises each year that have a lot of 11- 14 year olds, and they have to refuse 10 year olds. DCl should just change the age limit to 10, but maybe since kids are free to come and go they need to make sure it's ok with the parents.

Hi I am a youth activities CM. That's exactly right. There are some 11 and 12 year olds that come to the club/lab that the grown ups do not allow to be self check.
Oh and the ages will never change!! Even if Edge did change to 10-14 there would then be grown ups wanting their 9 year old in there!!

I think there doing something wrong in the lab if so many kids are bored in the lab. I know some parents will chime in and say their 12 year old loves the lab, but on our last couple of cruises there were a lot of 10 year olds in the Edge. Just my opinion and I doubt Dcl will change anything. Im just glad mine are both over 11 now.

I think it is really difficult with the 10-14 year old range. Kids develop at such different rates that it is difficult to use age as the only factor in placing kids in the programming. My older DD wanted to stay in the lab at 13 (when the Edge didn't exist and the Vibe was 13-17) and they happily welcomed her. It was her best cruise. Younger DD couldn't be caught dead in the lab at 11. Thankfully she had the Edge at that point and did well there. I was very glad that the kids programming allowed some wiggle room in the grouping.

My daughter hated the kids' clubs. She will be 10 on our next sailing, and I told her I think she'll be able to go to the Edge with her brother. I hope that is the case! We are going at the end of July (need a new ticker).

Hopefully, she's not going to hold you to that (or be upset if it doesn't happen). It's possible that she will be able to "age up". But it's also likely that she won't be able to. No way of knowing until you are actually on the ship and ask the CMs at Edge whether there is room for her. Especially sailing on a summer cruise where the clubs may be maxed out.

@samily We got off the Magic yesterday. My DD turned 10yo in September and was allowed into Edge after I signed a waiver. She is also another child that was bored out of her mind in the club/lab so I was so happy she could go to Edge. There were very few Edge aged kids on our sailing. Just be prepared that if they are at max capacity a 10yo may not be allowed into Edge.

I'm hoping this is the case on the fantasy too. We are traveling with two other families that both have 12 year olds and my dd is only 10 ( and hates the kids club). I'm not telling her this is an option though until we are on board and have verified they will let her in.

Glad to hear they are still allowing 10yo if there is room. I had kept him in the Lab earlier this year to give his older brother some space, but now he is moving up to Vibe.
Bree, thanks for the confirmation!

I'm also glad to hear it's just not my kids who are over the Lab at that age! I distinctly remember our cruise when my daughter was 11 (Edge didn't exist yet) and we struggled to get her to go to the Lab (and this was a kid who had been sailing and enjoying the clubs since age 6). She is turning 18 in a couple of months so we decided last minute to squeeze in this quick cruise so she can have one more cruise in Vibe!

My 10 year old was allowed in the Edge in our last two cruises. Her cousin, who was 9 1/2, was not. As for the 10-14 range....my personal experience was that it didn't pose a problem. My 10 year old spent time with an entirely different group of girls from her 13 year old sister. The kids seemed to gravitate towards others of similar ages.
