Reasons you love being an AP

I took my first solo trip in January 2015 and was hooked, so I bought an AP when I went back in October. I’ve had one on every trip since then. My last AP expired May 4 (with my last trip ending May 2), but I have a new one ready to activate on August 11. I live in Cleveland, so it’s a quick 2.5 hour flight away. I’ve taken at least 2 trips per AP and they’ve saved me quite a bit of money, with ticket costs and discounts on rooms, food, merchandise, MNSSHP and the Keys to the Kingdom tour.

But my favorite thing is the freedom and lack of pressure to “make the most” out of a Park day. If I only have a few hours to spend in a Park on a travel day, then I can go without having to consider the cost of adding an extra day and determining if it’s “worth it”. And if I want to leave a Park at noon and spend the rest of the day Resort Hopping? No problem. And no worry that I “wasted” a day. It’s very freeing.

I bought an AP last November when my DD was accepted to the Disney College Program. It has paid for itself over and over. She bought one before she left, so we are going back in 2 weeks! We live 8 hours away, (9+ if you factor in Atlanta), so it is not a bad drive! I love the freedom it has given us to park hop and not feel like we have to get everything done in each trip. The discount is nice, even though not all places offer it. DD got yelled at quite a few times for that.....

Is it cheaper for us to buy our APs together? Is there a family rate that is better than doing them separately next time?

I'm an on-off passholder. Some years I do and some I don't. Last year, I got one because of the extra month free deal and I had plans to go at least twice. I ended up fitting in three trips. I live in Michigan.

Best thing: I was able to attend the Pandora AP preview which was amazing! I felt like that experience totally made the cost worth it. I was able to experience the new land with very low crowd levels, and ride FOP 6 times in a row. Had a really neat behind-the-scenes experience on it, too. A sensor was malfunctioning preventing our room from getting the all clear to go. We got to watch the ride engineers try to figure out what was wrong, and then like guinea pigs we were shuffled around from room to room. None of us minded all that much and the cast members were really great. We determined there was a ghost following us around because it happened in two different rooms! We were given FP to go again though they weren't really needed.

I know this experience is not typical and may never happen again, but even just the thought of a little extra magic like this will keep me going back and buying APs when I can afford it. I'm lax right now but plan on getting one next year when Star Wars Land opens.

DH and I have upgraded to annual passes twice over the past few years, traveling from NJ. Just made sense since both times we knew we would be coming twice within 12 months. Of course, it turned into four trips the first time, and will end up being five before the current pass expires in September.
Having the pass gives us the opportunity to take advantage of airfare sales from Southwest, we haven’t paid more than $360 round trip because we can be very flexible. We have rented points for three trips, and stayed value for the other two. Right now staying at Pop for three nights, and will spend under $1000 (we eat light and cheap!).
I love everything Disney, and, even getting close to 60, will do every ride except Mission Space.
Our other obsession is the Atlantic City casinos, and this is WAY cheaper!

Another local here - we live 3 hours away but if we wanted to be spontaneous and drive up one day and stay overnight offsite, we can. Like everyone says, it's basically the freedom. It has spoiled DH though, he thinks we get red carpet treatment everywhere we go with it. :rotfl2:

I’m a local AP holder and like most others have said I love being able to go to the parks for a few hours then return home. Don’t get me wrong there are plenty of times I go all day, but especially during food and wine I love being able to go get some food/drinks from my favorite booth, grab a FP for test track and then head home :)

When we moved from NY to Charlotte seven years ago, Disney became an 8 hour door to door drive. As a side note, when we went with friends from here, they flew. Their door to door time was 6 hours, they had to go thru the whole airport routine, and had to rent a car when they arrived.

Anyway, Disney now became something we could do on a long weekend.

I like the daisy chaining of benefits that we do. We are DVC members, so we can get a discount on AP, at times that discount can be substantial. Since we have AP, at times we have purchased TiW. It was a no brainier when it was $75, but at $150, not as much so. Who knows what the future will bring.

Multiple visits a year means that we can do what we want. I will never wait 2 hours for a ride. Either we RD, FP, or we skip it until next time. Knowing we will be back in a few months makes decisions like that easy. We tend to take a break in the afternoon, head back to the hotel for a while. I do not feel that we have to go commando every day to get in as much as possible. There is always another day, always another trip.

Having an AP means Free Parking (the other FP). I used to travel quite a bit for work, so on those long weekends we tend to stay off site, and often on points. Driving also means that we will often leave after work, and we will spend the night outside Jacksonville. It makes the drive a little bit easier. Cheaper rooms, just over two hours from Disney means we can still make it there the next morning for opening.

I also learned why people think we are crazy. Our school district has for a few years turned the MLK holiday in January into a five day weekend for students. For some middle and high school students, depending on final schedule, it could even be six days. We had planned on going to Disney, when friends of ours asked if we would mind if they came with us. Having planned way in advance, and having a friend who was a cast member at the time, we were able to swing the five days, four nights at the All Stars for just over $300. Throw in a free (points) stay at a Hampton Inn in Jacksonville, and my cost of the trip including driving, parking, hotel and passes was at $400 before any food.

Our friends booked a basic package at All Stars, with passes for the parks. That came to $1,900, before gas, the extra night on the way down, etc. They were looking at about $2,200 for the same time we were only paying $400. Don’t get me wrong, the AP cost something, but their cost was already worked into the trip the previous summer (July). And we used the passes again for the next summer trip (in June). But their $2,200 vs. our $400 means we can do the trips more often.

We have been known to drive down on a Friday night to meet up with friends from New York for a Saturday, and perhaps Sunday morning. But we are drivers, and as I stated before, an eight hour drive is not a big deal to us. but nice to meet up with old friends from time to time.

So to answer the original question, what I love most about the AP is that we get our monies worth, and we get to be really flexible.

I'm an on-off passholder. ...
Same with us. We try to do the July to July AP, making one year's "Big Trip" in July, and the next year's trip in June.

Has not worked out every year, but we hardly ever renew our AP. We just wait until the next trip and get a new one.

We have had APs on and off through the years but as new FL residents I love that if I am craving Satu'li Canteen for dinner we can head to AK after work for dinner and just walk around and enjoy the park for a bit. It's great being able to go so frequently that you no longer care if you are able to get FPs or if the lines are long - we can just go and enjoy the atmosphere.

Coming and going the parks without having the pressure of maximizing a 'day'. Many times we book a 3-4 day trip on airline points just to enjoy Epcot events like F&W or Festival of the Arts. We never mind heading into a park on the day of arrival to do 1-2 rides either

I love the resort discounts that we have gotten with the AP. It is especially nice when I can get them for family members who are traveling with us.
It is nice to have the photopass downloads. And the 10% food and merchandise discounts are nice, too. We eat at a lot of resort restaurants.

I've also enjoyed some of the premiums they have given out at Food & Wine, like wine glasses and other glassware. I wish they would go back to offering those again.

And then there was the Panora passholder preview event that we were able to go to because we just so happened to have a vacation planned during the event.

The downside is that it is too easy to justify a WDW trip when you have the AP. :)

DW and I have had APs for many years. At first the decision was simply financial once we started taking two trips per year. But then having the card became something more. We both keep them in the front of a pocket so we see them every time we open our wallets. It was a constant physical reminder that we would be back to WDW soon.

Then three years ago when I retired we became Disney snowbirds. Our APs took on new significance as it allowed us to pop into a park whenever we wanted. Yes, the resident APs are still expensive but we fit it into our budget and consider it our 'experience' splurge. Last year we did switch our AP's down to gold as we realized that we were staying away from the holiday crowds.

Having an AP in our pocket gives us a wonderful freedom to enjoy WDW whenever we want.

Currently in my first ever AP year (we took advantage of the free month promotion that was part of the MK's 45th celebration).

I think the thing I have loved the most is not feeling like I "have to get my money's worth" out of a day in the parks. In the past, I've always been rope drop to park close, and never would I ever have wasted a day of admission on just a few hours in the morning (I've always taken short long-weekend trips in the past, where a single day of admission is still pretty pricey when you are talking a 2-4 day ticket). With the AP, we've been able to enjoy a few hours in a park on the day we leave, which has been really nice. I also ended up down in Orlando unexpectedly for a weekend this past December, and on the day I was to fly home, I popped into a park for an hour, mostly just because I could.

The 20% discount on merch is nice for my pin collecting habit. :)

The free photo downloads has also been fun. I'd probably never pay for MemoryMaker since there's just two of us and we are adults with no kids, but we have taken advantage of the free downloads and it's been nice to not have to bother to hand over a phone or camera at photo spots.

Been a passholder since 1995. I like knowing I can go whenever. I live approx 3 hours away so not much planning is needed.

I like having the flexibility to take unexpected trips when the opportunity arises. I live in CA, so often times if I am going to the East Coast I will see if I can stop in for a couple nights while already 'in the area'. I also like not feeling like I have to do or see everything, I can just relax and do as much or as little as I want without feeling like I need to go to the parks because that's the number of days I have purchased.

For me that almost always stays offsite, the biggie for me is saving $22/day parking. That really adds up.

Texas passholder here! Whenever the flights dip, I'm off to Disney. Never paid more than $100 RT, it's a no brainer!
I love not having to worry about purchasing tickets and tagging along when family goes. The discount is also nice!

For us the AP lets us just slow down and take in the little things that normally get missed. We don't have to rush. If we miss a ride, no problem, we know we will be back.

shopping and dinning discounts are offered year round, you do have to check ahead of time for them though. Basically every WWDW owned store has the 20% discount, many non Disney owned stores and restaurants offer 10% off

Yep, but I tend to shop in non-Disney owned shops. For example: I buy masks from Italy in Epcot, that part of the shop is not owned by Disney so no discount. We like to eat at HBD, no AP discount, La Hacienda no AP discount, Mayan Grill at CS no AP discount. Just seems to work that way for us.

:) It looks like you need to try new restaurants
