I haven't booked our flights to DL for August yet because I was waiting for my DH's vacation days to finally be confirmed. After going crazy over the weekend looking at the fares, I decided to bite the bullet and book them today (assuming fares would be cheaper on Tuesday) without the official confirmation. My plan was to book Southwest to save on potential change fees and that way we could go into SNA, even though I would rather fly direct. Our only nonstop option is Delta into LAX.

DTW to SNA on Southwest is currently about $510 roundtrip for the flights we need.
DTW to LAX is $438, although I know we need to add bag fees.

So do I bite the bullet on expensive fares to SNA and hope maybe they go down in the future? Or should I buy the LAX fare and pray the vacation days are approved (we have no reason to think they won't be)? Or do I sit tight and wait a bit longer? I am very conflicted!

I wouldn't gamble on Delta, their change fee is $200 per ticket. You can get a Delta American Express which is free for the first year and you get 1 free bag per person. But I wouldn't book it until you are 100%.
