Here's the story..

Some of you may remember way back when I first came to the DIS, I had a problem viewing the DIS from my laptop. I could get to this site and see the Main Discussions page normally.
But, when I went to the CB, or any forum...although I could see the page and the whole set-up...well, the spaces where the thread titles, and where the name of the last person who had posted to the threads...was completely blank!
The stuck Announcement threads at the top of the page looked like this.....
Important:

...that's it...no message. The other spaces for thread titles were blank.
But, the link for thread starter was there, as well as the number of replies. Needless to say...this made it impossible to post, read, or do anything on the DIS from my laptop.

Alright, now...about 2 weeks ago, my DSL which I have had for about a year, suddenly went caput. After doing all the checks my DSL techie people had me do...they also agreed that their product went caput.
While waiting for the arrival of the new DSL modem, I dragged out the old laptop, and just for kicks...came to the DIS to see if some miracle had occurred. No, it had not...the view was the same. Then, for some reason, I decided to try to access the DIS with IE...and it worked!
I could see everything here normally....all the links were there! Yahoooo!

A few days later, the new DSL modem showed up and I hooked it up to my desktop puter, as it was before. Figuring that I could DIS from my laptop now...I actually let other members of the family use the desktop.

I was dismayed to find that now, I could not view the DIS properly, not even with IE.

I have come to the conclusion that the DSL connection is interferring with my laptop's ability to let me see the DIS properly.

So I ask you.....how could this be? Any ideas?

I don't see how an access method or speed would relate to display issues regardless of which browser you are using.

How were you connecting with your laptop if your DSL was down?

First, I should mention that I have 2 AOL accounts.

We have 3 computers here and wanted to be able to have 2 online if need be.
So, with the DSL connected to the desktop computer, one family member could get online there, and someone else could use the laptop... using the other account. We would just plug the laptop into another phone jack. It's not networked...but you can do that if you have DSL and 2 accounts. We only have 1 phoneline.
When the DSL went caput...of course, only one computer could be used at a time...by dial up.

So, in answer to your question, I could access the DIS by dial up on the laptop OR the desktop when the DSL was out.

Actually, having 2 accounts has no bearing on the situation.

DSL runs off the phone line...but on a different frequency from voice communication (phone). That's why you can talk on the phone and be online at the same time. When you only have 1 phoneline, you can still have 2 computers online at the same time as long as they are on different accounts AND 1 is connected with DSL and 1 is dial-up....although, you won't have use of the phone then.
So, I guess I just mentioned the 2 accounts to explain how I was able to have 2 puters online with only 1 phoneline.

It rarely happens that we have 2 computers online at once anyway. But, I would like to DIS from my laptop sometimes....and I can't, and so that Christmas gift my dh got me...rarely gets used by me. So, I'm just trying to figure this out.

Use the laptop with the regular dialup and see if it works again.

Okay JC...

Right now, I am here via my desktop (which has the DSL) and also via my laptop (by dial-up).

The view from the laptop is still just as I described in my other post, so I am posting this from my desktop.

If I were to shutdown both computers, and disconnect the DSL from the desktop...I would then be able to dial up on the laptop...and have a perfect view of the DIS.

I wonder why I can't have that when the DSL is connected to the desktop.

It doesn't make any sense but I'm not a telco wizard either. It wouldn't surprise me if thre is some sort of routing thing that is started with the DSL running. Have you reported this to the Telco?

JC

No, I haven't discussed this with the phone co. yet, but I'm thinking about it.
All I really do online is DIS, do research, and make webpages. My hub sometimes visits sports message boards and has no problem viewing them from the laptop. In fact, there seems to be no problems for any other family member having a proper view of any site they go to from the laptop.
It really seems that it is just a problem for me to DIS on the laptop, lol. So, I'm not sure how I would explain that to the phone company...know what I mean?? hehe

It would be great to make sense of it but, maybe this will just remain one of life's little mysteries.

Thanks for trying to help JC. I appreciate it.:)
