Really sick of the TV "pop-up" Ads.

You know, those stupid things that come on the bottom of the screen WHILE you are watching a show.

At first, they were small, in the corner & out of the way. Now, some of them cover up to 1/4th of the bottom of the screen. What annoys me the most, is when they cover up the transcripts of whispered conversations!

ITA When this started, I knew it was only going to get worse--in the beginning, it was th channel logos (not a horrible idea if you're a channel flipper). But then it was the ads for other shows, and they've just gotten so intrusive! And they run them over and over! Hey, if I'm interested in NASCAR (wrestling, Surface, ER, etc.), I'll find it--really! Like people have been doing for decades. It makes me less inclined to watch the stupid show they're promoting.

The animated ones are the worst. It drives me crazy when I'm trying to focus on a show and a Nascar races across my screen! And they are HUGE!

I agree, they are totally annoying.

::yes:: I was just thinking how much those things annoyed me last night.

TNT and USA seem to be the most guilty of those big pop-ups. How many times do you have to remind me during a program that I am watching that a certain movie or tv series is going to be on said day and time?

Remember a few years ago, when "Joe Millionaire" was on Fox? They'd have an animated pop up at the bottom...with him running and the "brides" running after him?

The Simpson's did a spoof on it...too funny.

I think the worst ones are the ones with sound...I think it's the nascar ones that does the "drill/tire changing" sound...it's kinda annoying.

In this case technology has made it very bad. Since they can do this very easily, and quite cheaply, watch for it to get much worse.

On the other hand, if they can do this rather than cut away for some lame excuse for "breaking news" then I'm all for it.

I think it is time to finally bite the bullet and acknowledge that commercial television is a flawed model: Just charge us $2 extra per hour of television we watch, and that should cover the revenue lost from commercials, pop-ups, etc.

Very annoying. One for the Hulk actually startled me this weekend...I was engrosed in what I was watching and then this green growling thing popped up! So annoying! I vowed never to watch that channel again.

I don't guess they bother me too much since I don't think I've ever noticed it. I have noticed the logo, but no advertisements.

I usually ignore them. They are annoying, but then so is 98% of the programming on TV and cable today. Sometimes the pop-ups can be more entertaining that the program they pop-up on!

They mainly annoy me when they interfere with the program - like when there's subtitles on Lost or when there's a factoid on Good Eats. Good Eats annoys me because it's always an ad for the Good Eats videos - hey, you can't see what Alton's factoid so buy his videos!

And I hate to say it, but it will keep getting worse. With things like Tivo, people can skip the commercials. Companies won't pay for ads no one can see. The only way to make sure you see them is inside the show. I hate the thoughts of what could be to come.

Then they'll loose more & more people to cable shows. Myself, I watch much less commercial TV than I used to.

Now if someone could invent a popup blocker for the TV...... :cool1:

hugsquared, that's a great idea! I can't imagine the technology would be super hard--it's not embedded in the show, just in the feed. Maybe it's time for me to dust of my EE degree... Just think of how much money the person who invented spam blockers or the phone thingy that stops mass dialers is making! :teeth:

I don't like them either. I especially don't care for the ones that pop up to tell me what I'm watching right now!! Yeah, like I check my driver's license every five minutes to see who I am!!! :teeth:

The cable shows are the most obvious users of these techniques, especially those on FX and TNT.

::yes:: Add Bravo to that group, too -- they have pop-ups on practically every show they air.

Come to think of it there are pop-ups that annoy the heck out of me: the ones that pop-up to tell you what you are watching now (as if I really needed reminding) and hang around to tell you what's coming up next (what- so I can decide to change the channel quicker?)
