I am moving to chicago from england prob at the end of September and im really scared about going to a high school!!! I get my gcse results next week here and they have to go over with me but will they matter over there or not. I have got to go and look at some high schools when i go over.

What are clicks?
Im 16 so what grade/year will i be in as im totally confused as over her i will be going into year 12.
Is anyone on here a cheerleader and what are they like as they dont seem very nice on all the american programs/movies.

Oh gosh, we do get our GCSE results next week D-:

I do know that a year, is one higher then a grade, so you would be going into grade 11.

Not sure what "clicks" are.

I'm not sure if GCSEs will matter or not. I know they don't do GCSEs or A Levels in the USA, and i'm not sure what the equivelent to them are.

Hope that helps a bit :)

Cliques are like...a group of kids with similar interests that only hang out with one another.

The cheerleader thing is just an over exaggerated label on television. I don't think that you have anything to worry about that. Each individual person can be nice, no matter what they are or do in school.

A 16 year old goes to 11th grade. (starts 11th grade as 16 and then turns 17)

Im not from the US, but im sure you've got nothing to be scared about. Everything is exaggerated about schools in America anyway.. :)
And dont worry about Cliques, you'll find people who you'll want to hang out with when you get there. Tbh, i bet school there isnt any different than school in the UK. Im sure you'll be fine.

All the best and good luckk!

R u allowed to drive to school as i cant drive over here but my dad promised me that he will buy me a car when we get over there and help me learn.

Thanks about the click as i really dont want to be left out as over here i have loads of friends at school and i will miss sitting with them at lunch etc.

marrypops are u scared about results day?

Usually you can drive to school, but it really depends on the school. You usually have to buy a parking pass for around 3-5 dollars though. I think it was mentioned before but if your 16 you are probably going into 11th grade[Junior].

About the cheerleader thing, don't listen to movies. :) They for the most part are wrong. I know some cheerleaders who if you picked them out of the crowd you would never ever guess they were[if you are looking from a movie standpoint] and are some of the nicest people i know. So if you want to cheer go for it, it will help you meet some new people :]

I'd compare High School to High School musical, if you're going to compare US High schools to a movie. :p (well, my HS is my own HSM lol)
I love high school. It's easy to find your clique if you do a sport or club. (Like you said, cheerleading. I say go for cheerleading because you like it, and you'll make tons of new friends) I did drama, and I found my "clique".

And you are allowed to drive to school, just get a parking pass. It might depend on what school you go to.

Heh, at my school they wouldn't dare ask us to pay for parking. We have a crap lot in behind the school. It's not paved, so when it rains it's like a muddy river and it's just nasty. I t hink they're paving it soon.
Doesn't matter though, I don't live int he US.

I am ofended by that word

you can have whatever friends you want and not be judged

Personally I wouldn't compare high school [at least my high school] anywhere near High school musical. I mean the movie...is a movie. Fake. High school is nothing like that in my opinion and yes you have your good friends, but they don't necessarily have to be into the same things as you. Maybe its just me, but I make friends easily with all types of people. My best friend runs track and I guess would be considered a "jock" but I am more into studying and art.

I dunno..Don't all schools burst into song during basketball games/lunch/practice?

Good, so mine isn't the only one? XD
Jk.

Uh, first off, Chicago is awesome.
Second off, you'll probably be really popular simply because you're from England.
Having an English accent is about the coolest thing that anyone can have... lol.
Cliques are really exaggerated in movies/TV. At least, I think they are... this will be my first year in a big school. Lol.

haha, I wasn't being serious.

They do? Wow. So I'm not the only one! :D
School would be a lot more fun if everyone took a musical break once and a while.

There's nothing to fear from us Chicagoans. ;) As the others have said, 16 year olds generally go into 11th grade which is know as their junior year. If you know where in Chicago you are moving, I can help name you different schools to look at depending on your grades, extracurricular activities, catholic/public, if you want to go to an all girl school/co-ed, etc.

Most high schools do allow you to drive and park. My school personally charges $50+ for a parking plaque.

I've never heard of the GCSE, but I don't know much about transferring schools, let alone from another country, so maybe they'll help you be accepted by a good school.

But I'm sure you'll be accepted just fine over here. Most schools are not super "cliquey" like american movies may suggest. Cheerleaders don't run a school, jocks aren't super giants who get away with not doing homework, and accents are awesome. ;) Whatever you do over there you can almost certainly do over here, there may just be different names for them. And keep in mind, us Chicagoans have our own accent, but they're not super annoying.

Haha, okay. & It would be more fun and entertaining if everyone just all of a sudden broke out into song and dance. :rotfl:

Hey from another 16 year old Chicagoian! Are you moving to the city itself or a suburb?

Okay so basically, it all depends on where you are moving too. I live in a western suburb and go to a high school with a bunch of rich *****es (I'm not saying all rich people are *****es but the ones at my school are. They think they rule the school, so annoying to those of us who aren't as well of as they are.) Cliques are just a name for groups of friends. But they are so exagerated on tv just like everything else. At my school, you can drive to school. But there is only a senior (grade 12) lot. Only the seniors with a permit can park in there. But there is the street that juniors and sophomore can park in, but its first come first serve which means gets there at 6:30 when school starts at 8.

Basically, don't worry. Everything is very exagerated by tv and movies. Most people are nice and invited. PM me and we can talk more about the great city of Chicago and high schools out here if you want =)

omg school start at 8!!! i odnt have to be in at my school here until 9!!

we going to be living just north of Chicago.

how do the classes work? is it an 2 hour subject before break and then an hour before lunch and then another 2 hours after lunch before going home at 3.30 or is totally different.

Well, I don't really know THAT much about high school but around here I know that it starts at 7:15 (freaking crazy if you ask me) and ends at 3 pm. How long is your lunch in England? I heard somewhere that school's in Europe have lunches that last an hour, but that may not be true. Here they last 30 min usually but high school may be 45 min. Usually classes last about 70 min each, and most people's schedules are different.

Cliques suck by the way.

Jeez. You go to school early.
Class doesn't even start until 8.40 here, and depending on the teacher (well my homeroom teacher wasn't ever in class until half an hour into it) it starts at 9.
Ends at 3.24.
My lunch is an hour long form 12.10 to 1.10. Each class is around an hour I think. And we have 6 minute breaks between each class and then another 3 to get to class.

Well when i was in year 11 my day was like this

i would get to school 8.45 and we would have form period with our form teacher until 9.05 and then we would have a 5 min to get to our next lesson and that would then be 9.10-10.10 and we would have another lesson from 10.15-11.10 and would then have 20 min break and have another lesson from 11.25 till 12.30 and have lunch till 1.30 and have another lesson 1.30-2.30 and then have a last lesson from 2.30 till 3.30 and then go home. #

We also have to wear school uniform all the way up to year 11 and then six form we can wear are own clothes and we would only do 3-5 subjects for 2 years and we would have more free periods. We also have to get 5 A*-Cin our gcse to do a-levels in college or six form
