It shouldn't be much longer. The other comments are pretty accurate, as to the heart rate and other systems shutting down. Talk to him. Tell him its okay to go on. Many times this is all it takes. He can still hear you even sedated on the morphine. Chances are that he is in no pain. He may just need to hear it from the ones he loves that it is okay to go on. I see it all the time in my job as a RN. Hope this helps.
