Really enjoyed the Polynesian

We returned December 19th from 6 nights at the Polynesian and 1 at the WL. We stayed in the Hawaii bldg and loved our indulgence!! I was unsure about choosing concierge but the convenience of soda and water as well as juice all day was grand. We were able to make breakfast from the morning offerings on the days we chose to and the evening hor's douvers were great for a snack or light dinner. There was a limited choice, but it is not meant to be a buffet, just a sample of cuisine. It was nice to have a glass of wine or cordial without hitting a bar, and the desserts were fabulous. They were presented in very small portions so you could try 3 or 4 and still only be eating 1 "piece". Good thing because we each found several 'yummies' each night! :)

The descriptions on Steve's site are exhaustive, so I won't repeat them here. I will list our faves:

Fresh pineapple chunks
white chocolate mousse in dark chocolate 'cups'
seafood chowder
chicken ceasar salad
Fruit Loops (that's the 2yo! :) )
Oatmeal raisin cookies (dh went nuts)
strawberry mousse in chocolate 'cups'
fresh bagels and english muffins
banana bread
hawaiin pineapple coconut bread

Almost all the offerings were well made. Your ability to make a 'meal' would depend on how you felt about the evening theme.

The debate about whether or not the food was meant for 'self serve room service' was settled the first day. There were always small trays, paper cups, paper plates, plastic utensils and hot beverage cups with domed lids. The wine and cordial 'area' provided small plastic cups and so did the 'juice bar'. No doubt the Polynesian means the lounge to be used for your conveniece and not as a 'dine in' only.

I was also pleased that the water bottles were a perfect 12oz. size. Not too big to fit in a fanny pack or diaper bag but not too small either. Soda was canned so Bob and I usually kept those in our room and purchased soda in the park if we chose. The PB&J were prepackaged and there were always whole apples and bananas so light lunch could go to the parks as well. You could also request juice boxes (apple only) and the cereal came in single serving packages. (Fruit Loops, Raisin Bran, Granola and something else.)

One quick note about the ducks. PLEASE don't feed them. I know they beg, and it seems harmless enough, but this can be dangerous for them. They become dependent on humans for food and that is not good. You might feed them bread but the next guy will throw cookies and PB&J. Let them find their own food and eat what is healthy for ducks. They don't do any better on junk food than we do. Thanks! :)

Now, I know the people I am going to address probably don't read DIS boards, but just in case, here goes:

I am NOT your babysitter. I am also on my vacation. I am supervising my children and I expect you to do the same for yours. The lounge is not for play time nor is it a relaxing place for you to sit while your children run up and down the stairs and trash the game area. That sort of behavior makes it impossible for my children to enjoy the 'quiet game lounge'. Not to mention any adults who may use that area as a place to 'hide' from other people's kids. Get a grip, please. There are others in the resort and you are being irresponsible. And really, do you let your kids do that to your kitchen or dining room? Then WHY would you let them do that here? Do you truly believe the lounge service staff have nothing better to do than crawl under tables wiping up ground in PB&J? You are rude, and you need to stop.

Sorry, had to get that off my chest.

BTW, Steve, I'm not sure if you were there or not, but I heard Dick and a guest having a conversation about how fab you are! :D You're famous! :)

If you need milk (white or chocolate) please ask. They keep white milk out at breakfast, but the other must be requested.

As to staff friendliness, they were wonderful. We were kind and polite to them and they were always gracious and friendly to us. Guess what?? If you treat someone like a servant or slave they will NOT be nice to you. (That's for the people checking in right before us.) If, however, you respect them and treat them as such, they will serve you with grace and all will be well.

The room was gorgeous and huge. Three children and 2 adults plus the pak-n-play fit fine. There was a frightening dip in the floor and I have heard here that they are replacing the foundations. Much needed. The general need for refurbishment was not evident with the exception of the lounge area. Tired, worn carpets (especially the stairs) and many dings, dents, etc. Mind you, it was all quite clean. Just worn. Our housekeeping was wonderful and room service was worth every overpriced penny. :)

I'm sure I've forgotten 40 things but suffice it to say that what you have heard is true. The Polynesian is a wonderful resort and worth the money. Concierge service is as well.

BTW, I found out that "Poly" is a terrible racial slur. Forgive the example, but apparently it is the equivalent of saying "Jap" or the infamous "N" word that has hopefully died a great death in America. Please don't say it. I wouldn't mention it as I know it is an innocent slang to most of us, but a lot of native Hawaiins work at the Polynesian and wouldn't you just die if you knew what they heard you say? Anyway, now we know.

Let me know if you have any questions!

Thanks for the indepth report. Also, thanks so much for pointing out the "poly" slang bit. I know most people on the board just use it as an abbreviation instead of typing out the whole resort just as they use YC for Yatch Club. But after being on these boards for so long I can see it being easy enough to just let "Poly" slip out. I definitely do not want to offend any of the native staff.

Glad you enjoyed yourself despite other peoples kids. I for one will be making sure my 2 DS's don't spoil my or anyone else's vacation while still enjoying themselves.

Happy holidays.

Thanks for the detailed review! And, welcome home! :)

I couldn't agree more about out-of-control kids. I don't fault them, just the parents. If they treat the lounge that way, one can only imagine what their rooms look like! I feel badly for the housekeepers. You can only imagine what they see!

I had also read that about the slur, once I realized it, I always referred to the resort as the Polynesian.

It is a great place to stay.... I was a CBR "relocatee" because of the rehab, I chose to upgrade to the Polynesian. Disney is smart doing things like that, now that I'm accustomed to having the monorail at my fingertips, I'll never want to stay anywhere except deluxe.

We stayed in Tokelau 3942. great location, we could walk to the TTC and had a great view of the quiet pool (which wasn't so quiet sometimes), so I totally agree with you about not wanting to be another one's babysitter on vacation.

One thing I did notice about my whole vacation was that, children did not cry in any of the resorts, MGM, Epcot, DTD, just in the Magic Kingdom. Hmm, I wonder why that is?

Thanks for pointing out the misbehaved children. I do blame the parents-there is a time and place for children to be running around, and most parents can't see that. I have to say alot of the times that I have been in Disney, I have found myself watching other people's children, because they are making me nervous-whether it's falling off of something or breaking another thing... Disney is a place for children of all ages, but wellbehaved children make Disney a SAFE place!
Great Point!

We leave the Polynesian concierge tomorrow and I have to agree with HSminnie...there are lots of "characters" checked in to concierge right now (for lack of a better term). We've been here since Dec. 19; a lot of people seemd to have checked in yesterday and Sunday. Talk about unruly kids! We have a 3 yr. old and 17 yr. old and we made sure they waited in line at the concierge lounge, unlike some other people who thought it was "cute" that their "darling children" ran up and grabbed whatever they wanted and touched everything and basically ran amuck. Okay, I won't get started on this though...we've had a nice time here in spite of other peoples' behavior.

:D Wow, I didn't want to say anything, but since there are so many others out there that feel the same way,I might as well put in my 2 cents. We see this all the time at wdw. Some of these kids are totally out of control. Can you imagine how much damage they cause? And as was said ,the rooms are probably even worse. People seem to have the attitude that"If I'm paying this much for this vacation, I can do what I want, and that goes for my kids!" Are these people so dense that they don't realize that this is part of the reason they are paying so much for the vacation? Somebody has to pay for the damage there "little darlings"do. It's a real shame.:( :( :(

Aloha and great report. I like many of your opinions and I am sure some are not popular but I agree. I am so glad you had such a good time at the Polynesian. You will notice I always call it the Polynesian and not the abbreviated version. I have studied Tiki and Polynesian culture for a long time and you would be amazed at how authentic things at the Polynesian are even though many see tiki as tacky or 60’s which just shows that people don’t understand the background of it all. That is the important anyway. The important part is that they enjoy it and have fun with it.

Thanks again for the report and I would love to see pictures if you have them posted anywhere.

Aloha

Steve

Our family arrived early on the 19th and left late on the 23rd. Most of the staff was absolutely wonderful and we certainly utilized and enjoyed the lounge. I know precisely what you mean about the unruly children, though! And isn't it funny that you even know the names of the worst-behaving kids because you heard their parents shriek their names over and over and over. (They never actually parented them, just periodically screamed their names at the top of their lungs when they disappeared or did something particularly offensive.)

As much as we loved the Polynesian, we would probably never stay there more than two or three days at a time. We need laundry facilities in our room, and have gotten a bit spoiled for larger accomodations and separate sleeping areas as at OKW or Beach Club.

We're all kind of missing Disney today. My daughter particularly wanted to wake up Christmas morning in her own bed, and I feel much the same way. DH wanted to stay, but we have sort of compromised by decided to stay next year for New Year's Eve!

Steve (aka Tikiman),
I spoke at length with Chef Dick and mentioned that I knew him through info from your website. He said, "Of course I know Steve and Tara; they just honeymooned here." Seems he's a retired Navy man, just like my husband and I will be in a few years. He was only there for three of the six nights we were there because he took a few days vacation. Anyway, thanks for your site...we had great time!

YES! They offered hula lessons the Saturday we were there. I am not sure if it is more often in the busier seasons. We were going to attend, but since it was the only chance we had to see AK the girls opted to go to the park instead. I wish you could have seen them deciding. It was so cute! :)

Steve, I have pics, but only family stuff. Dh didn't take much of the resort because the references on your site are so great. We use a digital Olympus and only had 2 cards which we knew we'd use up on the girls. (we did too. Almost 600 pics!!:D) Here's the URL for the ones we have up:
