Hello All,

I renewed my license this past year and was unaware that REAL ID's were being done so I just got a regular license as normal.

I am flying to Florida this summer....since my license isnt the "verified" kind, will that cause problems for me? I have heard that they were going to be required to travel even within the US...

Anyone have experience with this?

I don't think it's an option to get one or not. Either your state is meeting the requirements or not. As OrangeCounty said, enforcement has been delayed.

Update - I found out it is optional in some states.

both PP's are correct.
i live in NYS who is out of compliance.
i too renewed my ID less than a year ago.
my passport is expiring this month so i've decided to also get a passport card so that if/when the required ID is enforced i don't have to worry about it because i'll just hand them my passport card instead of my noncomplying state ID.

If you're going to be doing any foreign travel that doesn't involve simply driving cross the border just get the passport book.

getting the passport book is essential to me as i do plan to fly out of the country.
but i don't want to bring my passport book to disney world when i could just have the card in my wallet.

When I went to the DMV they asked me if I wanted a regular or verified and I had no idea the verified existed. So I asked her what it was for and she said if you travel allt or leave the country so I figured I wouldn't need one. Bummer on my part. Can I go back and get a verified one even though my license doesn't need to be renewed??

Ok, you meant you'd get both. :)

Pretty sure you could. But you don't need it and won't for a good while. (if ever)

If we knew what state you live in we might be able to help more specifically.

I live in DE, they are in compliance but they issue both so its possible the OP didn't have the correct documents for the Real ID in his/her state.

Here my daughters got a "real ID" from the start as new drivers but for a renewal it depends on if you have the required documents.

For my renewal when I got the paperwork the details on what you need to bring to renew and be issued a compliant "real ID" were specific and easy to understand so I was able to do that. If you don't (have) bring the necessary paperwork you just get a traditional non compliant license.

A few of my friends and neighbors were caught off guard and did not have all the paperwork so they chose a non compliant ID, once the enforcement starts they will have to return to get a real id or as a pp said get a passport or passport or both.

I just renewed my PA license and no additional info was asked except for social security #. No mention of real ID.

According to this DHS website, DE & CT has until 10/1/2020 to be compliant for domestic travel.

Just sharing my experience as I and my dd's have a Real ID from Delaware.

I had to bring either a BC or Passport and verify my ss # I had my passport and SS card to "upgrade". Not going to argue just sharing my experience when renewing and having the choice of real id or regular renewal.

If you google Delaware renewal options they are very clear about what you need for the new ID vs just renewing and I was appreciative of that.

I see what you are talking about. I didn't realize that more info was needed to get a Real ID. I thought it just had to do with how the state processed their licenses. Looks like PA was granted an extension so my license is probably not compliant. I do have a passport I can use.

What is Real ID? I've never heard of this.

I saw the CT link and I don't have to worry about it since my license is only two years old. I've always assumed that ID's are federally compliant (which I think is stupid that they aren't and demand a gold star). The US is an idiotic place.

Especially since we have all this panic, but you can still fly domestically without ANY ID at all. Like my dad does, once or twice a year. There's even info on it on the TSA site.

but because you may have to go through extra screening i wouldn't do it.
i don't need more "security theater" holding me up when it already stresses me out to begin with especially at MCO.

I apologize in advance for the lengthy post:

There's been a lot of confusion over the Real-IDs to begin with. I know for me locally it's gotten HUGE media attention. This is because while I live in KS our airport we use is in MO. KS had been largely compliant since 2007 so it really hasn't been in the news much. It was actually quite a shock to most of us to find out that MO wasn't compliant and wouldn't be granted another extension.

Since 2003 I've had 4 different designed licenses with the most recent license change being in 2013 (wouldn't have needed to get a new one but I got married and needed to change my name). The design before last is what my husband currently has. While it has the information need the material kinda feels fake (even the current design feels fake but has a lot more security information on it so it doesn't look as fake as it was before). Actually 2 months ago while he was in MD a bartender actually put a crease in his license because she thought it was fake (she was totally wrong in handling his license that way anyways though). Then again my first license was lamenated so we've come a long way since then.

This info is from 1/21/16 so I apologize if it is different now: "Beginning Jan. 22, 2018, passengers with a driver’s license issued by a state that is still not compliant with the REAL ID Act (and has not been granted an extension) will need to show an alternative form of acceptable identification for domestic air travel in order to board their flight. Passengers with driver’s licenses issued by a state that is compliant with REAL ID (or a state that has been issued an extension) will be able to use their driver’s licenses or identification cards. Starting on Oct. 1, 2020, every air traveler will need a REAL ID-compliant license, or another acceptable form of identification, for domestic air travel."

I renewed in November at my local AAA office and declined the Real ID version. He told me if I changed my mind just come back and they'd give me the new one. I think he said it would be $10.00.

It makes no sense. They don't do anything more than look at the ID. No records check. If they do a good body and bag search, what does it mater who the flyer is?

May as well throw this in the pot......plans rigth now are to require Passports for all domestic flights in 2020.

That will settle the License issue. For flying and *loop* cruise ID.
