Ready for flames -- we hated the WL!

Ok, I have written reports on our restaurants, car rental, Universal parks, and pool home, but I saved this for last because I knew it would be the most controversial.

We stayed at WL Saturday March 5 through Tuesday March 8, and we had a terrible stay. It was our first visit there and we were excited. We wanted to love it. I think a lot of the problem is our own tastes, but some of it lies with WL management.

We were put in connecting rooms on the 5th floor directly above Whispering Canyon Cafe. Our "woods" view was a few skinny trees, then a service road and service buildings. To the left was the parking lot. We could hear delivery trucks every morning. We wouldn't have used the balcony anyway as a woman in the room next to us sat out and smoked 24 hours a day. The pile of butts on that little table every morning was enormous!

The worst thing about the rooms was their location overlooking the lobby. Yes, I know we should have asked to be moved, but we did not because (a) we had just moved from a week in a pool home, my mother (Not a DISer) had accepted our rooms and had our bags moved there while we were at the pool area, and we did not feel like packing up again as we were only staying three days, and (b) we were told we would probably NOT get connecting rooms if we moved. The noise was UNBELIEVABLE in that lobby. The only thing I can compare it to is a train station. You had the water noise, then the music, then tons of people at all hours of the day, then the loud restaurant (WCC) which we called "the screaming place". The noise came right into the room. And it did not end until at least 11:00pm each night. To make matters worse we got a memo which stated that there would be OVERNIGHT rehearsals of a very loud new stage show at MK until March 16. So just when the lobby noise wound down, the MK noise started up. We did not sleep for 72 hours.

Overall, we found the WL to be the most stressful and least relaxing of all the WDW hotels. Lobby was MOBBED at all hours of the day with adults and kids (little girls in princess dresses runnning around on sugar highs at 11:00pm at night, boys playing ball in the lobby at 6:30 am-- we had never seen this at a WDW hotel). The pool area was crazy, with obviously stressed out lifeguards YELLING at the kids. On Saturday there was a wild group of tween boys and a counselor of some kind trying to rein them in -- unsuccessfully. Wet towels everywhere -- even on the floor of the elevator, on the chairs in the lobby, and of course on every single lounge in the pool area.
We found our way to our rooms the first two days by the old food that was left on a tray two doors down from us.

The service was overall adequate but inferior to, and much less friendly, than what we have experienced elsewhere. For example, we rented training wheel bikes for our preschoolers and were not given helmets (we evetually got them, of course). Service at WCC was pretty lame, hostess service at Artist Point was awful, but table service there was excellent. Roaring Forks -- it tooks 20 minutes to get hot food even when it was uncrowded, and cashiers would stand there, not offering to help people who were obviously confused, looking around, not sure where to order, etc. We bought the mugs but the instant coffee was worse than the coffee in our room (I know this is true everywhere at WDW) so we never used them. We saw tons of people with old mugs. Maybe this is allowed at WL?

The mousekeeper, Dina, was great, even making towel animals one day -- a first for us. But she is the only CM who made an impression on us at WL. The boat captains were gruff, the front desk people very efficient but business like. My mother put it best when she said, "they're not rude, but they're just short of Disney."

Our rooms were very clean, although the towels were threadbare and stained. The shower head was worse than the one at our camp! Rusty and weak, it made for a long shower. We asked for extra pillows and were told "we are having trouble finding them" although eventually we got two more. My mother's sink's cold water spigot was broken.

I thought the Lodge itself was beautiful, and could see trying it in January or November -- an off season, maybe midweek. I also think we learned something about our family style. We don't need to take the theme parks home with us at the end of the day. I can see how people love the many activities and noise and such at the WL, but if you don't want it, there is no escaping it. Sure, we could have changed rooms, but the lobby, pool area, and restaurants were busy and loud all the time.

I know the WL is a real favorite on the DIS, for many precisely BECAUSE of all the hububb (or maybe you visit on the offseason? Or midweek?), but I hope this can help other families like us who prefer a calmer, quieter experience make the right decision for them.

No flames just an I'm sorry you had a bad time. We have been there twice and had a wonderful experience. Granted they were in off season and once was only 2 months after 9/11 but we love the lodge. I hope your experience isn't a sign of things to come because in our hearts it is a special place.

I'm sorry. It's very disappointing to be all hyped up over a place and then completely have a different experience. But, at least you got a chance to give it a try. What appeals to one does not necessarily appeal to another (we had that experience with AKL). I'm glad that there are so many different types of resorts.......lots to try..........and lots to choose from. Your opinion/experience is your own.......don't feel bad because YOU don't like a particular resort.

Start planning your next trip! :flower:

I did read your restuarant report so I was looking forward to this one also. No flaming from me. Every person is most certainly entitle to their opinion especially based on their own experiences. I like to hear the good and the bad. I'm sorry you had a bad time at WL. I know others have had the same noise issues you had, due to the lobby noise. And the noise from MK at night must have been really annoying, to say the least. We like a little peace and quiet when we come back from the parks also. So far, for the most part, we have been able to get it.

Actually, we stayed at Villas of Wilderness Lodge over President's Day, and weren't blown away either. Part of it was the decor/theming was so familiar to us as Minnesotans. While it was lovely, we learned that we like OKW Florida feel or our beloved Saratoga when escaping the winter's cold.

But, there were some things wrong there. Roaring forks was confusing at first, and always had long lines too we thought. They ran out of life jackets for 5-6 yr olds on Saturday. Pretty lame for WDW - they shd have enuf stuff for kids. But as I waited in line to get one, I realized that people who had made boating reservations - and left the parks based on that - couldn't go boating. They were deservedly pretty angry. To make matters worse - the woman checking out the life jackets was really nasty about it. I mean nasty to people - "Well, maybe its ok for you for your kid to drown..."

The boat captains were in a pretty bad mood. The bus drivers were jovial comparitively we thought. The funniest thing happened to our son with one of the boat fasteners. The sea gulls were just on a rampage all trip - dive bombing people (esp. babies with food in strollers) right and left at the MK - dive bombing for food at the pool - pretty much terrorizing everyone.

We're not afraid of birds - we have a parrot - so we laughed at their naughty bird like behavior. But they were really aggresive as you got off the boat. One flew right up to my son to "attack" him - (actually just fly up close to scare him so he would drop his pop corn.) But my son was kind of waiting for the bird to do this, so as the bird flew right up to him he waved his other arm in the air and yelled "HAHAHA" really loudly. The boat lady got mad and snarled at him "Thats not nice!" My son and I started to laugh - it was so ridiculous - he was joking back at the bird and the birds were really pills that week.

So she got angrier and went off "Thats really not nice. How do you think the bird would feel." SHe kind of started after us, so we high tailed it away from there.

By the way - the bird just sat on a piling and waited for more victims. All in all, I think the cast members - except for the life guards, were in a pretty bad mood - more than anywhere I have ever gone at WDW.

I'm sorry to hear you were disappointed in WL. Different strokes for different folks.

I agree with your experience regarding the boat staff. We didn't think they were too friendly, either...the boat staff for the Epcot Resort area has always been much more friendly.

Hope your next WDW resort stay is more positive! :goodvibes

How disappointing :sad2: I'm sorry your stay was so unsatisfactory.
I hate when people are careless and messy (like the towels in the elevator  ) I also hate when I see room service trays in the hall for days. There is NO excuse.
I stayed at WL last April during Peak Season and LOVED it and did not experience all the commotion. We were away from the Lobby and overlooking the Villas.
Hope your next stay is much more fun - and RELAXING ;)

I just wanted to say thank you for your report. I have been concerned about noise from the lobby, as I can be a little sensitive to this, especially when I'm trying to get my kids to sleep. What you described is what I was afraid of! I have heard of some saying the noise was "enjoyable" and "background" type, but I know I really don't like hearing kids running up and down the halls when it is bed time (after 11pm) so I know I would not enjoy and "background" noise of this type from the lobby.

BTW, I know how hard it could be to switch rooms when you have connecting rooms. I've tried this at different hotels when I was not happy with our room and we would often have to choose between the "problem" location or rooms that were not together.

So thank you for your review. I think we all enjoy hearing negative as well as positive comments.

I too am sorry you had a bad time. We stayed at the WL in January with an absolutely lovely courtyard view (facing the lake with the pool in the foreground) on one of the upper floors. We never heard a sound the entire time we were there, except the nightly electrical water pageant which we could sit on our balcony and watch. Every morning my GD watched the rabbits playing down below from our balcony too. Staff was very friendly and helpful during our stay also. Our waitress at Whispering Canyon was hilarious, but only with the people who wanted to participate. Lifeguards were friendly and playful with the kids. Again, we were there during value season so maybe that had something to do with it. In May I'm staying at POP and BWV and hope I have as good a time there as we did at the WL.

Again sorry you did not receive the service you deserved.,

Thanks for putting on your flame retardant gear and posting. I like to hear all opinons. I'm sorry that WL didn't meet up to your expectations. All that noise from WC would bother us too.

No flames here, either. Im sorry to hear you had a bad time at the resort.

I stayed at WL in 2004. Our family loved it. I know the lobby can get noisy; however, we never heard any of that inside the room. I think it's a great resort; however, our family is not a woodsy, wilderness family so the theming didn't appeal completely to us. Don't get me wrong we still loved it and I will go back someday. This April we are going to try the Poly and I think we will like it because our family is geared more towards beach and polynesian lifestyles and theming.

We stayed at the WL Thanksgiving weekend 2003 and never expereinced any of that. It looks like you got them at bad time. While were were there, I could not stop commenting on how it did not feel at all like a holiday weekend (even though the resort was booked solid). We had a very peaceful relaxing time..... Sorry you had a bad experience.

You learn something new all the time! I am currently debating on how many nights to stay at WL, 2 or 3. I am going to split my tri between WL and POFQ. I am leaning towards 2 nights now! Which is OK, I was set on POFQ anyway, I just want to experience WL (so 2 nights is enough).

Thanks for the input!

If you want to leave the parks where they are and really relax, I recommend CSR! So beautiful and soothing. A wonderful southwest atmosphere, very different from Maine (according to your location) and very unique. Check it out sometime!

I have to say, I am amazed that anyone actually had such a bad exp at WL. We have stayed at WL 4 years in a row, 5 counting this May, and it has been an incredible exp everytime. Everyone is so nice and goes out of their way to make it a fun and exciting time, even the boat drives and staff.

Sure sorry for your bad time, it is a great resort.

I am very sorry that you had such a bad time, but I would have either 1) asked to be moved to another part of the resort after the first night; or 2) asked to be moved to another resort altogether.

Did you report any of these issues to management?

Me and my hubby always, always stay at the WL!! We have never ever had a bad experience. We used to stay at POFQ Riverside, or CS, but one stay at WL and we were hooked!

I do have a few opinions on your stay. First of all, Im sorry you had a terrible stay! But in defense to the WL...I will say this...

First of all, If that were me, I would of moved NO MATTER WHAT if it was that terrible..the smoking, the noise, etc. And the woods view is excatly what it is..WOODS. Skinny trees and if you ever read any of the FAQ's on the WL...yes, they have views of delivery roads etc.

Also, as soon as you walk in the WL lobby, you automatically can hear the roaring of the noise that comes from it, and you know your rooms are right up there overlooking the noise! So that should give you a tip right there! You also hear the WCC and you also automatically know what kind of racket comes from there!!

As far as the MEMO of the noise from the MK...well, at least the WL was kind enough to let all the guests know! They didnt have to do that!

As far as the kids and "tweens" playing ball in the lobby and kids running rampid.....THAT IS THE PARENT'S FAULT not the WL fault. Same thing with wet towels everywhere...GUESTS FAULT! Not the WL fault!!! And with the little girls in costumes at 11 at night---uh..its WDW...that's what kids do!

Everywhere you go there is always something that won't be just right, the coffee, the restaurants, the views, etc...but maybe other posters are right, maybe you went at a bad time when you couldnt reallly enjoy it, and dont give up on the WL...it is a GREAT resort and what you see is what you get.
Once again, Im sorry you had a terrible time, but if you were that miserable, maybe you should of complained or moved and then you would of had a much better time. Im not flaming you at all, just giving my opinion. I know if I was that miserable, I would of brought it to WL staff opinion just to see what they could do.

All in all, the WL is a great great resort to stay at. Just make sure and do your research on it! :)

No flames from me. Sorry you had a bad experience. Although WL is well loved around the DIS, it's just like any hotel/resort. You're going to have pros and cons and supporters and naysayers about it.

I think we all sometimes get too caught up in the hype and adoration that others or we ourselves give a certain hotel/attraction/park, that we end up bitterly disappointed if we don't get 100% magic all the time.

I think you should have brought up your issues to the management and see what you could've worked out with them. Oh, well... live and learn.

We tried WL for the first (and last) time a few years ago. We wanted to like it as well because it's such a beautiful resort. We found the CMs to be lacking a little compared to the other deluxe resorts we've tried (Poly, YC, BC, CR). The rooms are small and dark...and the pool is quite small as well. The main thing is we felt it was so far removed...I know there is a boat launch but it was very very slow in our experience. I love to visit, but I won't stay there again. We loved Artist Point, the geyser was cool, in fact the place is themed beautifully. I wish the "guts" of it were as good as the outside. Know what I mean?

That's the same view we had last September -- it added to our enjoyment of the resort.
