Reading online vs. Reading a book

I am inspired by another post about technology hitting high schools to pose a question. Do you like to read stories, information, news online or in boks, newspapers etc.?

Personally, I don't like to read online. I prefer to read stories in books and news in a newspaper. Just wanted to see what everyone else thought.

I prefer my Kindle.

I do read the paper every day on my laptop, though. I don't like to get ink on my fingers even though I've been assured newspapers don't do that any more.

OP- I agree with you. I'd so much rather hold a book or a newspaper than read online, no matter how convenient it may be.

Handbag Lady,
Whoever told you that newspapers don't spread ink anymore was lying! I like them, but they really do leave my hands inky.

SEE!!! I thought so!!!

What really got me was reading Stephen King's The Dome this past Christmas. My girlfriend was also reading it at the same time. She had the book. I had it on my Kindle. Needless to say, it was much easier for me to curl up with it on a Kindle vs. that GIANT VOLUME novel.

I read my news online but I read my books on my Sony Reader.

I read almost all of my news online now - I cancelled my paper subscription this morning, as a matter of fact. I was up for renewal but I seldom read the paper version anymore - it's mostly a repeat of what I read online yesterday.

I read almost all my pleasure books on my Kindle - and I hope to read the magazines on an iPad as soon as everyone gets on board. My ideal would be pleasure novels on my Kindle DX, magazines and newspapers on my iPad, almost nothing in paper form. I fought it for a long time but now that I've transitioned I can't imagine going back to reading paper books exclusively.

I have a hard time tracking when I'm reading online--I keep losing my place, and don't retain information as well as when I read a paper copy. This was a nightmare for me when taking the GRE, but I survived. At school, I read loads and loads of research studies. As tempting as it is to save ink, I always print them out.

As I work offshore for 2 weeks out of every 5 I have moved away from books and newspapers purely out of practicality. I have a Sony eReader for books as I can store dozens of them on there without the need for lots of excess weight for the helicopter. And as we don't get regular newspapers delivered the only way to keep up with the news is online.
And having said all that I do actually prefer the feel of a book - if only because it gives you a better idea of how far through it you really are :thumbsup2

I read all my news on-line. I even do the crossword on-line. I just prefer to read my books in hard copy. I used to have a newspaper subscription for a local paper and I found I was reading news in the paper that I had already seen on-line a day or two before. By the time it was in print it was SO yesterday's news.

I'm with you on needing the books in hard copy. It's just something about having the actual book and finishing it that's satisfying. As for the crosswords online, it's handy when you get into a jam and there are tools to help you complete a word. In the newspaper, I would just quit or move on to another game or an article.

I prefer to read the actual newspaper and books instead of online. My eyes get tired reading a lot on the computer.

But then again, I work for a paper company so I am a little skewed as far as paper is concerned. I even request paper bags instead of plastic at the grocery store when I don't take the reusable bags in.

I read books on my Kindle and news online. We do get the Wall Street Journal everyday, but my DH reads it more than I do.

I love reading the news online. If the short article satisfies me, then I can stop, but if I want more, then I can search and find more info on the topic.

I LOVE my kindle. I thought I would miss the feel of books, but you get used to it very fast! Also, like some others I read really long heavy books and when I travel it is so much easier/lighter.

I'd rather be able to read something portable. It's rather difficult to carry my desktop pc everywhere I go.

I do read on my computer, but only when I'm broke and out of new books to read.

Between traveling or trying to read at home with 2 dogs curled on my lap, I prefer my kindle.

I would like reading online casue there is not enough time for me reading a book when i am free, it needs more time and always i am too tired to read a book when i am off duty. Also reading online you can get more then you think more cause there are alwyas a great mount news waiting for you.:flower3:

I don't have a Kindle although I would love one. The idea of carrying tons of books anywhere, anytime in that little device and getting more instantly is just wonderful. The problem for me is the continuing cost of the downloads. I just can't fathom buying all those downloads when I can get books free from the library or borrow from a friend. So.....I read real books and news and stuff online.

I prefer to read a hard copy of things. I have some teachers that post a lot of articles online, and I always print them out. I have contemplated a Kindle but just don't know if I can do it. Dh is a librarian, and I am an English major...what do you expect?!? I think reading texts online is good, though. It saves money, is more convenient (easy access and portable), and probably saves trees. When my kids are my age, I am sure they will have no problem reading online. It will be how they will have grown up.

In the summer, I like to take a book to the pool while my kids play. I wouldn't take an E-book reader to the pool (risk of getting it wet), also, I'm not sure about this, but I would think that it would difficult to see it in the sun.

But, I read the "paper" on-line.
