I have recently discovered our local library and my forgotten love of reading. I've been having a great times reading authors I know and like, and discovering new ones. I generally go for well written young fiction, horror, fantasy, autobiograpgical like James Herriot, and true crime.

Recently read and enjoyed;

Both Dexter book by Jeff Lindsay
The Wish List by Eoin Colfer
Eragon by Christopher Paolini
The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time by Mark Haddon
E. Godz by Robert Asprin and Esther Friesner
Ender's Game and The Lost Boys by Orson Scott Card

I absolutely adore Nancy A Collins and, of course, J.K Rowling. Stephen King and Micheal Crighten are usually a fun read. My all-time favorite book is Watership Down by Richard Adams.

I finished Wicked by Gregory Macguire and I wasn't wowed by it. It was okay. Right now I'm starting The Bartimaes Trilogy by Jonathan Stroud and it's not really captivating me either.

So, please help me out here. Tell me about the books you've recently liked, or even books your kids liked.

I love Patricia Cornwell's books. She's written several and I really like them.
Along the same lines, I like Kathy Reichs (her books are what the show,"bones" is based on).

I tend to stick with those types of books but I just started reading one by David Sedaris and Beowulf.

David Sedaris and Beowolf are collaborating now? :teeth: I'm listening to David Sedaris read Dress Your Family in Courderoy & Denim in the car now--I love to listen to him read his stuff; he's so funny.

I've read so many good books recently--I loved The Thirteenth Tale which is a gothic mystery that reminded me of Jane Eyre and Rebecca. I read World War Z by Max Brooks which was an "oral history" of the zombie wars. Not my usual thing but it was very well done.

Right now I'm reading a biography of Catherine the Great which is really very interesting.

I LOVED The Kite Runner. We read it for my book club and it definately wasn't something I'd pick up on my own. Not only did I love it, I loaned it to my parents and my sister and all of them loved it too.

I told DH that it was one of those books our kids would be coming home with to read for school. Definately try it out.

That is surely an eclectic assortment of reads!

I love the library! Its a perfect place to lose yourself from real world troubles.

Here are a few reads I have enjoyed in the last few months.

Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels-first book in the series is One For The Dough (humorous womens fiction/mystery)

Nora Roberts-In the Garden trilogy and Three Sister's trilogy

Margaret Maron's Judge Deborah Knott series (mystery)

I am with you on Watership Down....a fav read of mine, too!
You should look into Warriors by Erin Hunter, its series of books about a colony of cats. Wild vs. Domestic breeds and so forth....

Also, my oldest daughter(age 11) loves the Harry Potter type reads.

A Series of Unfortunate Events series with 13 books, so far
The Wrinkle in Time series
Chronicles of Narnia-it is a series with 7 books
Redwall series by Brian Jacques

Just a short few! She also likes the murder gore reads such as Christopher Pike. He is a young adult author.

HTH! Happy Reading!

This piqued my interest so I read the synopsis for this book - wow, it sounds wonderful! I usually prefer paperbacks, but I don't think I want to wait for this one!

Don't wait! Run to the bookstore right now.
I read a quote about The Thirteenth Tale that said something like 'it is a love letter to books' and it is. Fabulous. :cloud9:

I just bought... and read the same night :rotfl: (I do that all the time ~ once I start.. I can't stop!)

"For One More Day" by Mitch Albom
Like his other books... it was awesome! :thumbsup2

I would probably understand more of Beowulf if David Sedaris wrote it! Thank God for the barnes and noble classics that give you definitions for all the words you don't know. :thumbsup2

I'm reading Dress your family in courderoy and denim, actually. I like it, so far...

Cool, okay so far I've put in requests for Bare Bones by Kathy Reichs, Bloody Bones by Laurell K Hamilton (just because I thought I'd try her stuff out..) A Spot of Bother by Mark Haddon (because he was touching and fun) The Serpent Gift (which was an accident but I'll take it anyway) The Black Tattoo (whic they FINALLY got) and The Kite Runner.

I already own the Narnia series and the first Wrinkle In Time book. I tried to get my DS to start the Warriors book, but he's pretty "meh" about anything that's not non-fiction. That boy would rather read a textbook than a story! Your daughter might enjoy Spy Cat, Varjak Paw or even Cat Stories by James Herriot. (I can't recall the authors of the first two off the top of my head, sorry.) DS likes cats, so I have really tried to find some fun "cat fiction" for him...sigh.

Oh, can anyone tell me which is the second book in The Series Of Unfortunate Events books? I'd like to reserve it also as we have the first one....

I got it from the library but I'm going to buy my very own copy because I know I'm going to want to reread it. I'm also buying it as Christmas gifts for some family members.

A Bad Beginning.

My kids loved these when they were younger, but they've outgrown them now.

Whoops! I just realized you asked about the 2nd one! I get them confused after the first one. But it must be either the reptile room or the wide window, since the 1st three books were what the movie was based on.

I love biographies. Can you tell me who the author is?

The author is Henri Troyat. It's an older book (published in the 70's) that I picked up at a book sale this weekend. It's kind of amusing--the cover makes it sound like a bodice ripper- "a woman who ruled everything but her own desires" :rotfl: -but it's a straightforward biography with footnotes and translations of Catherine's memoirs and letters included. DH was laughing at me because the cover makes it sound like it's rather racey but I shared a passage about an affair Catherine had and it was really pretty dry. :teeth: It's got some really interesting info on Russian history and I'm enjoying it a lot (while hiding the cover.)

I'm currently reading Eldest, the sequel to Eragon. It's pretty good so far. If you wanna read a great book, anything by David Clement-Davies. He wrote Fire Bringer & The Sight. And who can forget Tailchaser's song & the Bunnicula series, just perfect for Halloween.

Thank you!

Now, since I've seen the movie, do you by chance know the title of the fourth in the series? :)

I've added The Sight and Tailchaser's Song to my request list...I love the online request/renewal options here!

For anyone who likes true crime books, I'd suggest looking for anything by Harold Schecter. Somehow, his writing feels more like fiction even though it's not. He's very good.

I just finished The Kite Runner. I couldn't put it down! It's a good tale of redemption, and it gives a powerful glimpse into Afghan society. I highly recommend it.

I checked West of Kabul, East of New York out the library yesterday but have not started it yet. I think it'll be a good book to read on the heels of The Kite Runner.

My current read is a mystery, Silence of the Grave, by Arnaldur Indridason. I'm only in the first few pages, but so far so good. It is translated from the Iselandic and won The Golden Dagger Award.

I recently stayed at a friend's beach house, and while I was there I read Marley and Me (which I loved) and also a really good book called Finding Anna ; it was historical fiction, which I don't usually like too much. It was based on the true story behind the writing of the hymn, "It is Well With My Soul." I would recommend both of these!
