No flames please, I'm really just curious what fellow disers think will be the effect of Katrina on Mardi Gras, both at Disney and in New Orleans?

I have been to WDW once during MG and didn't find the crowds to be much of a problem, other than DTD on the Mon. eve before Fat Tuesday.

Wondering if LA. schools will still have that week off as vacation with the school many kids are now missing? Will this open up more resort rooms (discounts?) at WDW? Will crowds be down that week? What will happen in New Orleans, do you think there will be a MG just scaled back?

Just wondering what everyone thinks.

I don't know what the actual city of New Orleans will have going on for Mardi Gras, but our schools are still out as scheduled. Mardi Gras is more than just New Orleans. Most of the Gulf Coast celebrates in some way. We went last year and would be going this year for Mardi Gras, but we have a cheerleading competition for the next week, so our trip to WDW will be during the first week of March. I know of many families that will be at WDW for Mardi Gras.

I heard the mayor say the other day that the parades would go on in New Orleans. Only time will tell. One of the large float builders in the area did not have very much damage from the storm. One of the many big issues in NO is lack of hotel space for anyone! Relief workers are using any available spaces at this time and no one knows for sure how long they will be needed.
Many of the school children have enrolled in other school systems. So they may be out that week, depending on which school system they are in.

It really is a wait and see situation, so ...

Stay tuned for more info!

No one does Mardi Gras better then New Orleans, but as another poster mentioned we celebrate Mardi Gras all across the Gulf Coast. Moile, AL put on quite a party last year.

Dumb question- when is Mardi Gras?

It is a moveable feast. This year it is February 28th.

Can anyone tell me the schedule for Party Gras in Pleasure Island? I know they have stuff going on the weekend before and on Tuesday, but what times are events scheduled?

Many of the schools are out Lundi Gras (Monday) and Mardi Gras (Tuesday) only, but our school is again our the whole week so we are headed to the world. MG is scaled down in NOLA this year - parades just the 5 days before and MG day. Hopefully it will still be good for our city, we need all the help we can get....help me off my soapbox, that being said, we are going to my FAVORITE place..WDW

come to my college town of san luis obispo. we are REALLY big on mardi gras, well until the riots 2 years ago which led to 400 cops roaming the streets, and a tank! but we still party a lot.

Most of the schools south of Alexandria or Natchitoches, LA are out of school for a few days or a week (I'm not sure) but up here in North Louisiana, the only people that are off from work (not school) are Louisiana State workers. We have parades but aren't lucky enough to have the days off. We'll have a parade on 02/18 & 02/25 so the kids from up here won't be out of school.

I like Mardi Gras but we just don't participate in it except to work it (my husband is a police officer) so he works crowd control, and it gets rowdy.

Those in south Louisiana not affected by Katrina or Rita are usually off the entire week. This year February 27-March 3. However, remember the weekends before and after those dates. We always say that Louisiana moves to either the ski resorts or WDW during Mardi Gras. It can get really crowded but unfortunately for many people this will not be
a time for travel or celebration.

Hi all. Nice to see this post being updated. I am the OP, first posed the topic way back in Sept.

I sure am glad that there will be some type of MG in NOLA, goodness knows that city needs the $$ boost of tourists.

As for WDW, I love to see all the LA folks there. Last time at MK on Fat Tues. they picked a LA family all decked out in colors and beads to be the opening family. They came in on the train with the characters, it was neat.

I've got my beads ready and I'll be in MK again this year on Fat Tues!!

What a nice thing to say! I think Mobile does a great Mardi Gras! We are out for the week, so we will celebrate until the 26th and then we head to the world. Our parades start this Friday and last until Fat Tuesday!

Our district is only off Mon, Tue, and Wed. Some private schools are out all week, though. It will be interesting to see how the hurricanes will affect the crowd that week. It's so awful how people are scattered to the four winds now and so many lives are disrupted. That annual Disney trip that many veteran Mardi-Gras-weary veterans usually take may be taking a backseat this year.....really sad on so many levels. :guilty:

Hi all...we're headed to WDW for Mardi Gras. I for one am a little scared of MG this year...too little hospital space. a coworkers mom is still in the EMERGENCY room now, since 9:00 last night.....24 hours because they cannot find a bed for her. I think this is going to be bad.
