Why is PS changing the name on my images. After I edit and go to save, a small icon with a camera pops up in the save screen and underneath is the name info followed by these initals ".psd" ! what's that for and why is it there!! I have several shots I've edited and would like to load to photobucket but can't because of this name thing. :furious: I tried to change it to a .jpg ending, but the program adds that .psd after it each time!! What's going on!! :confused3

.psd is a photoshop file extension. It is a way of saving the drawing without compressing the file (like saving as a jpeg will do). Saving as a jpeg results in loss of quality in the photo. Every time you save it. So always save the PSD in a folder then do "save as" to save as a jpeg for uploading to a website or for sharing.

Saving the psd fiel will also save much of the photoshop history of your work on the drawing. You may be able to go back and undo the whole history years later.

I always copy the original file to work on. Use "copy and paste" (or drag it) to makle a copy in your working folder. That will make an exact copy with no quality loss.

If I have only confused you more let me know...

Good advice above....

also when you want to save as a jpeg, just use the save as command... it lets you pick the format.

If you're not seeing the .jpg option in the "save as" dropdown you're probably working in 16 bit color mode. You'll have to change it to 8 bit before you can save as a jpg.
If you can't figure it out give us a shout. One of us here will walk you through it.

Some PS operations will not allow you to save the file to jpg. In that case you can choose "save for web" and resize the image to suit your needs.

As for jpg, it's like jr said, everytime you save to a jpg the image loses a little quality. It may not be apparent the first time but after a few open & save routines the image starts getting kinda' rough.

Psd files get big, really big, especially with layers, so it's good to have a big hard drive.

Thanks everyone!! I think I've figured this out, let me recap to make sure -
PS4 always saves in the .psd mode - so for posting save a "copy" in the jpeg mode to load to Photobucket, etc. Also, this extension doesn't happen until you edit a photo, is that correct? So unless I edit something I've downloaded from my card, they are stored in jpeg?

I've never had this happen before - like with daisy pictures I posted on the macro thread - they saved to jpeg without me selecting it - that's why this threw me!

My normal flow for editing is - open the photo in edit mode - make a copy - make all changes to the copy - then I "flatten image" and "save as" . A title box pops up with the name and suffix that says, "edited" behind it. This is the first time I've had the ".psd" pop up there as well. And I wouldn't have noticed except that Photobucket wouldn't load my image!? Will photobucket take .psd images or just jpeg? Thanks again and I'm sorry for all the questions - need to find that instruction book for PS4!!! ;)

I have PSE 4.0 set up to save my jpg's as jpg's in a version set--so when I've edited a jpg file, it defaults to saving it as "image001_edited.jpg," for example. Then it saves the edited version on top of the original in the catalog, but I still have the original image to work with if I choose. The only time it defaults to the psd format is when there are multiple layers, in which case I have to flatten it and use "save as" to convert it to jpg if I need it in that format.

As far as I know, Photobucket won't accept psd files; you have to convert them to jpg.

There are times where I wished I had saved something in psd and never did. Its a must if you work with layers. There's nothing worse than opening up an image and discovering you need to eliminate a layer...and find out you're in jpg. :badpc:

I agree with pxlbarrel, after spending time working on an image I sure don't want to lose the work I did.

Save the image to psd *without* flattening, keep your layers for future use. If you "save for web" or "save as" to jpg, it automatically flattens the image to save it to jpg at that point (a note, I am familiar with PS but imagine Elements works the same, if not, my bad).

Also, "save for web" allows you to resize the image for convenient posting on Disboards. I generally save a 900x600 or so for posting, larger doesn't buy much since most monitors are no more than 1024x768.

Hope I didn't imply that I don't save the psd version too. When I work with layers, I save the psd version and convert to jpg if I need it in that format for printing or whatever, but I save the psd too. Most of my editing is basic stuff like levels, etc., so if I start out with a jpg file, I just save both the original and edited versions as jpgs.
