Would someone who's been a stay-at-home mom who's also trying to re-enter the workforce (after ~5 years of not working, and the last time she worked it was in a different state) be eligible to collect unemployment benefits?

You can't collect unemployment until you have paid into unemployment for a period of time. This can vary by state depending on whether or not you are trying to collect federal or state unemployment benefits.

Also, you can't collect unemployment unless you have been terminated/laid off by an employer. If you were fired for cause or choose to quit on your own you usually aren't eligible for unemployment.

LOL, seriously??? Getting unemployment for stay-at-home mom, what a concept! Who laid her off....the dad or the kids??? LOL.

Are you asking if you are able to collect unemployment while looking for a job, even though you have not held a paid job in 5 years? There is a minimum number of work quarters required for unemployment eligibility.

Normally unemployment is based on your average salary for the previous four compolete calendar quarters. As your salary for the last four quarters was zero per quarter, your amount of eligible unemployment compensation is zero.

Wow. Thanks for your input. Seriously...

Oh come on, surely you see some irony in your question?

If your family is struggling, I'm sure there are programs that can help people that are looking for employment - but they'd be more in the form of Welfare type benefits.

My friend thought that if you were looking for employment but unable to find it you would qualify for unemployment. I know nothing about it so I thought I would ask here. She's looking but hasn't had any luck so far.

I don't see irony in the question. I see a question with a fairly simple answer and no need for LOL's and ?????.

I cant blame the others on here for laughing at your question. Unemployment is for people who unexpectedly lost their job through no fault of their own (like me right now) and needs some money to pay the bills. Your friend has been surviving without a job for 5 years, so why should she think she would qualify for such a thing?!

Man...wouldn't that be wonderful.
My moms been looking for a job since we moved in Jan 2009 and she still can't find anything. We could use the money.

And we wonder why people have issues with public assistance programs and unemployment.
Public Assistance and unemployment benefits themselves are NOT the issue. It's people like that who try to get benfits that they do not qualify for and who abuse the system. What happened to honesty and ethics in this country. THAT is our problem.

:confused3Where does the op say anything about her friend trying to abuse the system? I think her friend just has some misconceptions on how unemployment works.

Well, your friend is correct in that unemployment is paid to someone looking for employment. But that person needs to have wages(earned) reported in at least one quarter of the last five quarters and have worked enough credit weeks(at least in PA).
