Re-allocating points question

I will explain. I booked a 2BR and a Studio for November. However, the studio may have to be cancelled closer to our trip (of course, prior to 31 days). When I made the reservation, I used '09 pts for the 2BR and had to borrow some '10 pts for the studio. I wasn't thinking....I should have done it the other way around because if we do cancel the studio, we probably won't get back before the end of our '09 use year and will lose the borrowed points. MS told me that if I need to cancel the studio, they can reallocate the points so I would be using the borrowed points for the 2BR and I can bank the studio points to '10. Confusing, I know. Has anyone done this and not have their reservation totally screwed up?

Consider sending an email to MS if you have to cancel the studio.

Carefully explain what you want to do and even include what your account / point status will look like when done.

That way, you will get an email confirmation that it was done and have "proof" should you need to "correct" something.

MS is great about moving points around to make it work out for you and they have done this for us a couple of times and just recently. Good Luck.

Another question:

Is it possible to use a portion of a years points and borrow a portion of the next years for a current year reservation? For instance, for my 2009 reservation I would use some '09 pts and some '10 pts. This would leave me with a balance of '09 pts should I decide to borrow for a last minute '08 reservation.

You should be able to do that. But sometimes MS is reluctant to borrow if there are still points in the current use year. If you run into that, you may have to ask for a supervisor.

Another option is to make a "temporary" reservation that you can cancel after you make the reservation with borrowed points. Then the points from the cancelled reservation are returned to your account and you can bank or borrow them as desired.
