So, this is my first winter in Calgary. As you locals know the last few days have been brutal.

We moved into a NEW home, and since this insane cold has hit I have had huge condensation issues on every window in my home. Yes, I set my humidifier down and use air vents for showering and cooking. We also have ice built up on the inside of the windows. So, I decide to wipe up some of the melting water from my windows and what do I find but a crack in the corner. I call the builder and they tell me to put tape on it until they can come out. Well, just a touch lead the crack from top to bottom. They came out to tape it up, how nice of them. ;) But, I am wondering this can't be normal? First, I think my humidity system is NOT working correctly and secondly, my window had to be defected? Anyone ever hear of such a thing? I am waiting for the maintenance sup to come out this morning.

Sorry this is so long, but I would love your thoughts.

Thanks

Dawn

I moved into a new home in 1999 and we had the same problem for the first few years with condensation on the inside of the window. When i called Dashwood (the window manufacturer) they indicated that the new homes are almost too airtight and don't allow the air to "breathe":headache:

Anyways, two de-humidifiers, and cracking one window about a half inch seemed to help. 9 years later I still run one de-humidifier in the basement consistently. Your foundation is made with a lot of water and that moisture can't escape anywhere. It sounds like you are doing everything right but it may take a couple of winter to correct itself. I remember it being a total pain in the butt

i agree with the above poster. I was told the exact same thing as houses are too air tight and water in concrete cannot escape. A couple of years and that will help out. Window was just a bad window.

I have the same problem in my house. It's 3 yrs. old.

Our last house was brand new and we didn't have this problem.

Op our house is not new but 7 years old. Does your house have an air exchange switch anywhere. New homes are so airtight that the air exchange circulates fresh air from the outside.
Make sure you roof vent is not covered with snow. Check for potential heat loss sites besides the crack
This weather is normal for Calgary. It will get cold and then a chinook will blow in. You usually know when the pounding headache hits.:thumbsup2

We have a "new" house too, finished being built Feb 2007... and this winter I have noticed major ice build up inside all my windows too!! The builder was only responsible for a year, apparently, and our home warranty does not cover this type of problem... if it is a problem? I will have to look into some of the links given and research it a bit more.
