I’m currently on a wait list for a trade with RCI resort in Hawaii for Summer of 2011 and I was wondering what the success rate is in getting the trade. It takes 160 DVC points to trade for a 1 bed room at RCI resort for a week, but there aren’t many places you can book for a week at DVC resorts for 160 points. Why would RCI owner trade their one week for a less than a week (or a studio for a week) at DVC?

II started this several years ago, I'm sure in an attempt to get more exchanges. DVC pools the points and then gives RCI full weeks, generally the lower 3 seasons and they slant them to the resorts that are less points. In previous versions you did have to trade a full week and in an even earlier version, had to trade a full week from your home resort. Even at the lower points, most exchanges in RCI are still a down-trade for DVC members. There aren't a lot of reasonably comparable resorts in HI on RCI, esp for Maui or Oahu. The Hilton's which are rarely available, Wyndham Beachwalk and KBC are about the only 3 I'd consider for those 2 islands through DVC. You may want to look at some of the independent exchange companies which tend to get additional inventory at RCI resorts and give you access to resorts not otherwise available through RCI.

I am an owner in Worldmark. They have several resorts in Hawaii. It might be worth looking into renting points from a worldmark owner and not exchange through RCI. Send me a message or check out this forum http://wmowners.com/forum/ for info on renting points. We might be able to trade point and both come out ahead.

I used 160 points for an Hawiian trade at Knanapali Beach Resort on Maui. I put them in last year for any summer month and Easter week. It came through a few weeks later... We leave Monday... so don't know how good it is.

I just posted a new thread about our recent trip to Hawaii using RCI exchange.

It did take a while to get an exchange, but it was worth the wait.

We don't leave until 4/17. I look forward to your review. I have read nice things about it, but the only warning we saw on I think tripadvisor was not to get suckered into listening to their timeshare lecture when you first check in (unless you are really interested in it).

We stayed there in 2002, it's a very nice resort. The 1 BR which make up most of the units were plenty large but had more of an expanded mini kitchen though not what I'd call a full kitchen. Also, their policy at the time was exchangers got parking lot view but you could upgrade for $70 a night, we declined with two 1 BR units. The management has changed to it's possible there have been a lot of other changes. Their breakfast meal plan at the time was a great deal though there wasn't a lot of variability from one day to another.
