I'm having a difficult time finding information on RCI exchanges. I just purchased a resale contract, so my RCI options may be limited. It will probably be loaded to my account by next Friday, and it has some banked points that will expire at the end of the month.

So, my options seem to be; try to rent the points, give them away, let them expire, or deposit them with RCI. I was planning to go with the first two options, but I just figured out that I can effectively extend the expiration by depositing to RCI. But I can't figure out if there's a minimum required to deposit. Is there any sort of RCI exchange rate chart or instructions that detail the requirements for depositing points?

Depending on how may banked points are in the contract, I wouldn't just let them expire--points equal money. I guess you also don't plan on taking a weekend trip to WDW by the end of the month.

Once you are officially a DVC member, you can login to the website and go to the DVC RCI website. It will show exactly how many RCI properties you have access to as a resale purchaser. Someone may post who has bought resale and will be able to tell you how many properties they have access to. There was an earlier thread which talked about it, but I don't remember where it was.

Dean will probably post at some point and can help you with the rest.

The options as I see them are:

  1. Bank them
  2. Use them for DVC
  3. Sub them in an existing reservation that may have points that are more flexible
  4. Rent them
  5. Use them with BVTC
  6. Use them with RCI
  7. Bank them with RCI
CC, DC, ABD and DCL are off the table due to it being a resale but if you can sub into an existing reservation, the freed up points may be workable. Specific to RCI, best to book an exchange rather than doing deposit first but due to availability, deposit first usually ends up being what's needed because a good exchange is rarely just sitting there. The points are set to a grid and for deposit first, I'd only deposit HIGH season which is 270 for a 2 BR or 160 for a 1 BR. Technically one can do studios and 3 BR as well but it's almost never a good idea even if you have to borrow a few points to make it to the 160 or 270. Once you get past adding a few unrestricted points things get a lot more shaky. I would not do a deposit first if I couldn't do HIGH season and likely not for a studio.

Essentially it works like you were actually reserving a week for that number of points and then giving it to RCI. That includes the availability issues and home resort issues (unlikely to be applicable here). You'll need at least around 60 days in advance of the end of the UY to make this work (45 days plus 7 starting on a Fri, Sat or Sun). That'll give you the option of an exchange up until a vacation ending the end of Dec, 2 years in the future. If one does this, have an idea of what you want and put in an exchange request up front or very soon thereafter, generally for 1-2 years ahead. Pay the fee, it's foolish not to in this situation. You can always change the request later.

I purchased a June use year because I don't travel in May. I actually have a trip scheduled for June, so there's no way I'll be able to use these points myself. They were banked from 2012, so banking wasn't an option. With only about 14 days to work with, I guess deposing a week isn't an option, either. It looks like my options are to rent them or book an RCI exchange.

You must have 14 days lead time to the start of the deposited time so RCI isn't an option either. You might ask for a banking exception.

What is a banking exception? I also have 16 points with a hold status. They need to be used by Sept. I found a RCI resort in driving distance that had availability in June & July. The next day those months were no longer available.

The good stuff in RCI and II go quickly and mostly to ongoing searches. What you likely didn't pick up on was the additional housekeeping fee, usually in the $50-75 range for anything under a full week. You can call MS and ask them to give you a one time exception to bank those points in which case they'd become full use points again for the next UY if you were successful.

You are right, I was not aware of the $50-75 fee. I did call MS. I was informed that RCI does not book 1 night, there is a min. of 2 nights. Though online I did find places with 1 night. I was put on hold & the rep reallocated my points. Thank you Dean for your help.

You can certainly book one night directly through RCI, I though one could using DVC as well. I think you got incorrect info but you still came out ahead, glad it worked out.

Do you have to be a DVC member to use RCI points?
I'm not sure the orientation of your question. I used RCI points through my Bluegreen account as well as I own directly with an RCI points affiliated resort. DVC members could use it for someone else but anytime you get an RCI exchange for someone not an RCI member with that account you MAY (not always) have to pay for a guest certificate as well.
