I know this is not the best use of DVC points, but was wondering what the points system was if I were to trade.

I seem to recall that essentially they are split into hi, medium and low seasons and that points are static based on that....is my recollection wrong? If I am, could someone steer me to where I could find this information?

Any info greatly appreciated

Most of the things you want are high season so if you assume HIGH season (160 1 BR, 270 two BR) then you're pretty close. The MID season points aren't that much lower anyway. What/when were you thinking of?

Dean,

I haven't been on these boards in a while... but, I do recall that you are the resident expert when it comes to this stuff... so, I am seeking your advice!

We are interested in a 1-week trade using our DVC points anytime this summer. We are a family of 4 with two sons ages 3 & 5. We are open to lots of possibilities... Caribbean, Northeast US, or even abroad (pretty much the only areas we don't want to consider this year are the midwest, Florida, and South Carolina). Do you have any suggestions that we should consider? Or any advice as to how we go about this? I am sure our options are limited in summer... but thought you might have some good ideas. I also thought you might have some ideas that would help us get the most bang for our DVC points. (We have 200 points to use and will be comfortable in a 1 BR unit).

Thanks for your advice!

You're a little late for this summer. For this situation I'd look through the list of resorts and see which ones are acceptable to you that have 1 BR units. Consider whether air is a limiting factor for you, if it is, plan accordingly. Unfortunately you can't directly search by unit size but you can narrow your list down and then look at them individually. Places like Branson, Ski areas (CO, Utah), Hershey, Wisconsin Dells, HI, LV. For the Caribbean, places like Aruba and St. Marteen. The Caribean should be a good choice since it's easier to get in summer and the weather is about the same. Make your core decisions and get your search started, you can add to it later.

We are thinking about trading into RCI for this August. We are wanted Sun-Fri in a 2BR. The week of 8/11 or the week of 8/18. DH is looking at what interests him and I've already looked and like Lake Lure, NC or Duck, NC or the Dominican Republic or Turks and Caicos. About how many points will it be and do we have any chance of getting anything? How do we do it? We will have to borrow points from 2013 and have 200.

Oops...edited to add...I thought this was a recent thread. I saw the 1/3 date...forgot this is now 2012.

You should be able to get something for that time but it may not be what you want or where you want. Resorts that allow less than a week are the minority. You'll also pay an extra housekeeping fee in all likelihood in addition to the $95 exchange fee. That should be around 160 points for a 2 BR 5 nights avoiding Fri and Sat nights. Many of the Caribbean options will be mandatory all inclusive so there are major extra fees for those. You can also usually gest those as cheaply without using your DVC points in exchange.

Thanks for the info. Looks like NC may be the way to go as we don't really want to do airfare and extra fees for all-inclusive.

Realize I made blanket statements. There are almost always exceptions. I would caution against making decisions based on blanket statements alone. I did a search on RCI points for start day of 12 August for 1-6 nights and visually cross referenced with the DVC exchange list. There are a few items that might work for you. Wyndham Ocean Blvd in MB seemed to be the best option and about the only one both on DVC's list AND that fit your apparent criteria for the Southeast, it was available in a 2 BR only. I would guess that to be 160 points for 5 nights.

Thanks. Is the time frame I am interested in medium season and not high season?

Edited to add: Just called DVC and we can get Peppertree at Atlantic Beach for a week (starting August 19) for 270 points...or Cocoa Beach for 5 nights for 160 points...or 2 places at Hilton Head for 5 nights for 160 points (both are not on the beach but about a mile inland...kinda like Disney's resort, but Disney provides the shuttle and has it's own beach). We could try to book Disney's HHI at 7 months out for the 5 nights in a 2BR for 205 points or we could try for Vero Beach at 190 points (for 2BR) or 2 inn rooms or studios for 140/160 points. She kept pushing the Vero Beach thing, which surprised me because I thought they were the toughest DVC to get at 7 months. I'll have to think about that one...would LOVE to go there.

As I'm reading it, that should be HIGH season, the 5 nights only makes it the 160 points for a 2 BR, 7 nights should be 270. The one I mentioned above appeared to be the best option for the week before and is also available for the 19th but it looks like for a 3 BR only for that time. I did note the HH options, some of those are fairly nice resorts. I've stayed at island Links and it nice but not up to DVC standards. Not much of a location either. I don't think it's on the DVC list but Barrier Island Station is open both weeks for Kitty Hawk.

Can we exchange DVC points for any RCI resort, or only for specific resorts? We were thinking of South Padre Island and on the RCI website there are several resorts listed but on the DVC website there is only one listed?

Through RCI, only the ones on DVC's list. However, you could rent out your points, exchange privately with another individual or use one of the independent exchange companies. There is some inventory at Inverness and Royale Beach in points plus those and 2 others on the weeks side. Royale Beach is the one on the DVC list IIRC. There really are quite a range of options currently but you should move soon if that's what you want.

My sister is a DVC owner and is looking to Trade into RCI for next summer(2013)... She would like to know the best time to call and get a reservation?? I think they want Gatilinburg. TIA.

If they want to trade DVC, the best time is 2 years out but anything a year or more out is likely to be successful but it might be some time before you get the exchange. I'd do the research and get on the list now for what she wants. Personally, for that area, I'd look for a private exchange using DVC.
