I am taking my 79 year old mother, on a cruise in september,2004
I must leave on a monday, from, port so this kills a DVC Cruise.
here are my two choices
4 night bahamas sailing on the soverign of the seas, on labor day.
or
4 night bahamas sailing on the majesty of the seas, on labor day.

can anyone help me?

are these nice ships, are they old ships?

any positive or negative comments, about food, entertainment, activies, etc?

does any have any knowledge of these being party ships, that will not be appropriate for a 79 year old

Thank you for help

I have heard negative things about Sovereign--old, smelly, etc. I researched the Majesty, and it is an older ship, but appears to have been refurbished better than Sovereign. I researched both ships on cruise critic--they have ship reviews that I find very helpful.

Been on Sov of the Seas.. it was okay.. but didn't compare with DCL at all.. Food, entertainment, ship accomidations all subpar to DCL, but for the money it was okay. I wouldn't go on it again, but I can't say I had a bad time.

The ship is old, and she shows her age, not as much as the Fantasy,IMO, staterooms are smaller then DCL or newer ships. But the service was good. It's just not as nice as the Wonder.

I also didn't like how the pools were salt water, but I think Disney is the exception with having fresh water pools. Activities seemed to be more limited then on DCL, I guess because most people are gambling.. I am just not a big gambler.

It's not really a party ship though, at least didn't seem like it on my cruise.

Like I said, I didn't have a bad time.. just if I am cruising to the Bahamas.. I would rather be on the Wonder.

I believe that my experience was isolated as I have found wonderful reviews of the Sovereign of the Seas, but I will tell you of my expereince. I will start by saying that I work in the Tourist industry and I am a firm believer that for every 1,000 people that has a great time one does not... I was the one :)

We are hige fans of RCCL and Disney, these are the 2 cruise lines we like to sail (15 crusies and counting between the two). Our experience with Sovereign was not a good one. We found the ship to be worn down (I know it's older and expect that) the rooms were VERY small compared to Disney and some of the newer RCCL ships (again I expected that due to it's age). However we had horrible service. I was yelled at by our room steward because I was in the room and did not have the Do Not Disturb sign out... heaven forbid I answered the door when he knocked. The Purser's desk messed up our charges and after 4 trips to them to fix the problems I was assured by the manager that it was taken care of, only to find out 2 weeks after we returned home that it was not and then battled with them for another month before it was finally fixed. We had some other issues in Nassau which I won't go into huge detail (that would take forever) about but the crew would not let my husband back onto the ship because they said he needed his parents with him it took us forever to explain to them that we were married and that even though he was under 25 he did not need his parents because he was with me (I was over 25)...not that that would be an issue for you, but it just goes in my poor service experience.

The Majesty is the newer of the two with her maiden voyage being in 1992 were the Sovereign's madien voyage was 1988.
They are not "party" ships, I think that your mother will enjoy them. There is quite a bit to do on board so there won't be a lack of activites but it is not a "party" ship. Entertainment is good. As for the food, I have to say that it is the best and the service in the dining room was the highlight of our trip...

You can look at Mytravelco.com (on the main page there is a link on the left that says 360 degree ship tours, from there it brings you to all the cruise lines and ships) there are links to view the rooms so at least you will have a good idea what you are getting before you arrive.

Anyway, if it were my choice I would go on the Majesty, only because I have had a poor expereince with the Sovereign (which again I believe my experience to be an isolated incident as many others love the ship and rave about it).

i went to cruisecritic.com. They seem to be high on princess cruise line, does anyone ahve any comments??

I've been on Majesty of the Seas. It was really nice and a lot of fun. The service and food were VERY good, the ship itself was fine (maybe a bit dated and a "little" tacky with all the lights and cheap brassy decor and astroturf decks around the pool areas) but it was still a wonderful cruise! Is it as nice as Disney with their classic, teak decks and beautiful decor, no. Was it still an excellent getaway and pure pampering, you bet! The rooms are closet-sized, but who's ever in them? The casino is fun, too!

The only thing I don't like about RCCL is their disembarkation process. What a nightmare. But all in all, I think you'll have a great time. They are there to make their customers happy and they've been around for a long time, so they must be doing something right.

DH & I are taking my parents on the Majesty in January, I can let you know how it is when we get back!:D
