I started a thread earlier about finding natural/organic sunscreen. I went on the Environmental Working Group's site to find the best ones, and I found Raw Elements. It was, however, so expensive that I only bought two face sticks for the kids. Here is my review:
-not quite as easy to spread onto the face. takes a bit more work because you have to rub it in or there are white streaks and pieces that come off if you press TOO hard. but, once you rub it in you can only see a smidge of the white. I am sure it goes away shortly.
-the smell is definitely not as pleasant as , say, a regular chemical-filled stick, but it is ok. kind of smells like sunflower seeds. a little nutty.
-if you look at the label, it has, hands-down, the best ingredients EVER for a sunscreen. And, it should, since it costs $15/stick.
-my kids faces did not get burnt today at camp, and this was the first morning I used the Raw Elements (they did get red cheeks when they used the regular stick once). that being said, they did not take the Raw Elements to camp. I put it on their faces this morning and they reapplied with regular sunscreen later.
So, I definitely like the RE stick. It has a two year shelf life, so I felt the price was worth it. After learning about sunscreens from the EWG website, I will definitely use better sunscreens from now on. Though, I cannot afford to buy RE for their body as well. $15 for a not so big tube. Yikes! I would need 6-8 bottles each summer, at least. $100 for sunscreen? I don't think so.
I will just go with Trader Joes for their body and use RE for the face. I will miss the spray-on sunscreen. I like the ease of it. Check out the EWG site. Very informative!
