I keep reading reports from people who complained about how sunburned they got at castaway cay. A great solution for us was to buy rash guards for the kids (My husband uses one too). If you've never seen them, they are meant to be worn under wet suits to protect against chest rashes, they are basically tee-shirts made out of thin baithing suit material. They are great. We live in a beach town, and our kids live in them. We give them a choice of having to put on sunscreen, or wear their rash guard, and the rash guard always wins. Then they only need a little sunscreen on their arms and faces. They wear them in both the pool and at the beach. When we were in Hawaii we had at least 5 people a day come up to us to find out where to buy them! (You can find them at any surf shop..I'm sure Ron Jon's carries them). If you buy a good quality one, it might be expensive, but your child will barely get any sun exposure.

I too agree with rash guards. We only buy the kind that have a Sun Protector Factor in the
material. It will be stated on the tag.:smooth:

I second this as a great tip!

As the Mom of two incredibly fair towheads, I often wished for sunscreen in the vat form so I could just hold them by their ankles and dip. My DD is ten and loves to wear her rash guard, some of the styles are very cool (she loves the Roxy brand). When my DS was younger, I used to buy him the "wetsuit style" bathing suit from L.L.Bean every year, they are 98% UV protectant and I only need to worry about from the elbows and knees down. The also had a great sun hat. Now that he is 6 he also wears a rash guard. The are just like a bathing suit but dry so quickly, so much more comfortable than a wet t-shirt sticking to your back, and regular t-shirts do not block UV rays.

I can swear by these things because we spend a ton of time in the water and on the beach and my kids have never had burns. We get ours from friends who live in California who come out to visit every summer, but I'm sure a surf shop would have them.

Don't forget sunglasses and a hat.
Fun in the sun without the burn!

I live in Colorado and we are not known for our beaches. :) Where would we find something like this? If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I have 3 redheads with fair skin and anything that helps is awesome.

If you do an online search under "rash guard", lots of companies come up. xcel is a great brand, ours have lasted through about 100 wearings and still look good. But buy them BIG. They are made to be worn very tight under a wet suit, which is not very necessary or comfortable for kids, so we usually buy one or two sizes larger. Our Costco usually carries them with the wetsuits this time of year.

I worked for Unilever Bestfoods for 20 years and was just downsized last March....we have always carried the Rit brand but I have never seen this sun guard. This must be fairly new!!!!

I really miss working for Bestfoods!!! We had a great company store!!
