Anyone live or work in or near Raritan NJ? My DH might have a job offer there and we no nothing about the area. We are currently south jersey and even though prices here are pretty expensive here, they seem very expensive up there. Anyone have an idea of a town up there that is family friendly with good schools that is affordable. And what I mean by affordable is a nice 4 bed 2.5 bath home for no more than $400k. TIA

My brother works in White House Station (about 20 mins from Raritan). The cost of living up there is insane so he and his family live in Forks Township, PA (next to Easton, PA) he has about a 45 min commute but the cost of living is well, affordable! The only bad part is the commute is nasty if the weather is bad but he's very fortunate to be able to work from home when it's bad out. I'll ask him this weekend about the area, but I highly doubt you'll be able to find a house like you are looking for in that immediate area.

Where in SJ are you? I'm in Burlington County

Thanks so much for the reply. It is much appreciated. We are actually in Burlington County as well.

IMHO I don't think you can get a nice 4BR 2.5Bath in Central or North NJ for under 400K

We are in Central Jersey and got a nice 4 bedroom with 1 1/2 baths for under 400k. Do you really need the extra whole bathroom? Sometimes you've got to sacrifice things to find a good deal. The one house we liked had 2 1/2 baths *but* one of the 4 bedrooms was the size of a closet. Total turnoff.

Bridgewater is right there and a great town. I don't live there but spend a lot of time there. Schools are good and it is a big enough town you can find the prices all over the board. They also have one of the best 4-H programs in the State and the BEST 4-H Fair!!

Thanks all for the replies. I appreciate them all. The job offer by no means is set in stone. I just like to prepare myself!

One thing to check out is the property taxes, too. My monthly taxes are almost as much as my mortgage payment itself (I'm in NE NJ).

I agree. I grew up in Nj and we moved out once we were married..To give you an idea. Here in Central PA we paid $201,500 for a 2700sqft 4 bdr 2.5 bath home on .75 acres, property taxes $2675 per yr..The same home where we used to live in Central NJ...$475,000 and property taxes of over $8500 per year..It is criminal the costs so much

Hillsborough is very close to there and a very nice town:). My girlfriend lives there and is very happy there. Homes aren't cheap...but they are consideratly cheaper than they were 2 years ago. You might have to settle for a 3 bedroom for the money you want to spend.

Hillsborough is very nice (I grew up there) Manville is not far and when I was growing up it was a very Polish town, but I do think that has changed. Just don't buy a house in Lost Valley....it floods there!!
Branchburg, Somerville (Somerville is more *city* like)
The area as a whole is very nice out here and the schools are good.
