According to various sources, Reese Witherspoon is in negotiations to lend her voice to the Disney cartoon Rapunzel: Unbraided, which would star Broadway actress Kristin Chenoweth in the title role of the long-haired beauty trapped in a tower. Glen Keane (supervising animator "Tarzan" and "Beauty and the Beast") is set to direct the project.
In a new take on the tale, Rapunzel encounters a modern girl and boy who have been thrust into her world. Witherspoon is being sought to voice the role of the girl, named Claire, who becomes a contemporary version of Rapunzel as she mixes with ogres, witches and other fairy tale characters.
The film also is expected to include songs, though they have not yet been completed. Sources said composer Jeanine Tesori has been drafted to write music. Tesori, who penned Broadway's "Thoroughly Modern Millie" and "Caroline, or Change", has previously worked with Disney on the yet-to-be-released sequels to "Mulan" and "Lilo and Stitch"
