the college is still open.

All area schools are closed except for us. People can check this on tv and on the school website. And yet my phone here at work keeps ringing, "Is the school open today?" A co-worker suggested I reply with, "Yeah, this is a recording, you moron." I had one instructor tell me, "Well, NO ONE could make it in this morning." Hello? Do you think my office phone rings to my house? I'm here.

Yes, I had to take the bus. Yes, even the bus was sliding everywhere on the roads. Unfortunately, I don't get to decide whether you need to come in or not--if I did, we all would have had a snow day. If you feel it's too dangerous to come in--I understand but that's your decision to make.

Ok, rant over. I've just had this same conversation roughly 100 times in the last hour and a half and needed to vent a bit!

I sympathize! I actually e-mailed my classes today to tell them that YES we are having class - otherwise I knew that I would be deluged with calls.

I feel your pain.

I go through this every January and February with my university. It takes a snowstorm of monstrous proportions for them to cancel classes.

You'll get through the day. :sunny:

I feel sorry for you. I'm in DC and they close school at the drop of the 1st flake. In fact, today all schools are closed and colleges have at least 2 hour delays and all the roads and sidewalks are totally clear and there was maybe 1 or 2 inches of snow!

My Freshman year of college--2nd day of class, 2nd semester--we had classes cancelled because of 21 inches of snow. That amount of snow is rare for this area. And that was the first time in 20+ years that classes were ever cancelled. So, if we had 7 inches, we went to class--well some of us. :smooth:

My university hasn't canceled, though a lot of professors have canceled their classes independently. We have a storm closing line that has a recording tell us if there are any delays or cancelations. Needless to say I call that number obsessively

I feel sorry for me, too, justhat! DD was dancing with the dog this morning and singing, "No school today! No school today!" Unfortunately, she's 15 and can stay home alone so I can't even use her as an excuse. :rotfl:

Even when I lived in New Mexico, the college that I worked at wouldn't close for snow. :teeth: I can never get a break. I think I need to switch to working for a K-12 school.

Wow, I had no idea Lansing received any snow. Haven't talked to DS all week. He's busy with finals prep., etc.

Is MSU open too, I suppose?

I don't understand why the Universitites don't close when weather conditions warrant it. The U of M in Twin Cities always stays open during bad weather.

Hiya, herc!

Yep, MSU is open, too. I believe the colleges/universities don't close because they don't want to give us a paid day off unless they absolutely have to. Understandable--particularly with our budget issues. So, if we stay home but the college is open, we either get docked (instructors, some staff) or have to use a vacation day (full-time staff.) I'd actually stay home if it were only a matter of getting docked--but when I have to start using my vacation days, that's where I draw the line!

Is your DS coming home for the holidays?

I think I need to learn that number
It's the last day of classes before finals here. My English prof was very unhappy with road conditions. She said we're pretty much the only school (K-12 or college) in the state that's open, and that if it wasn't the last class she would have canceled. The roads and sidewalks on campus are a mess; it's snowing soo hard. I'm really surprised I haven't heard of a closing for my other class; that prof commutes about 40 miles to get here. But I'll be done with classes by noon, and then I can enjoy watching the snow fall. And I will open the curtain to do that no matter how mad at my my hung over roommate gets. They all (3 of them) have no class today because their prof has to drive with just one arm (she shattered her shoulder 2 weeks ago) and didn't want to drive in the snow (smart woman) so they're still asleep

Hi Amy,

Yes, DS is driving home around the 20th. It's about a l0hr drive. Getting around Chicago area is the part of the trip that's a major pain.

It's turning out to be a pretty snowy fall for a lot of the country.

Sorry you didn't get a snow day, Amy. I remember when I attended MSU they just never closed for snow. Only once in my memory, 1978 :)

LCC must be the same way.

Thanks, Kath! I'm toughing it out--actually, it's pretty quiet so I'm getting a lot done and DH will drive me home. I really didn't expect the school to close--it's just the phone calls were driving me mad. They seem to have tapered off now, thank heavens.

Oh do I feel your pain on this one! Our college hasn't closed either so all staff are here, however a lot of professors have canceled class OR students just haven't shown up so it's a ghost town here.

I hate this crappy weather and want to move someplace warm! :sunny:

it would always drive me crazy in college - we NEVER had a full snow day, if anything was officially cancelled it was just the morning or evening classes. however, half the time when class wouldn't be scheduled i'd trudge the 12 blocks to school only to find that even though the university was open, my professor couldn't make it in so class was cancelled anyway.
