Rant - Borders has annoyed me...

Borders, in downtown Boston, as in the big bookstore chain that is.

I was just in there with my BF during lunch. Today is his birthday and he wanted to look for some new RPG books and we made our way into the crowded store and heard the ranting shouts of some speaker who was apparently being sponsored by Borders.

Every other word out of this womans mouth was a swear word. I don't care what she had to say or what her point was. This was a crowded, popular bookstore on a weekday afternoon at 12:30.

You could hear her quite clearly from the childrens section where I had gone to look for some Disney books for my neices (who were not with me, or else I would have just walked out). There were several children sitting in the kid's area reading, and more than one parent who looked a little uncomfortable...

I have no idea who this speaker was. I did not see her and I did not ask. I only assume she was a sponsored speaker because she had music playing in the background, and was very loud and was drawing a crowd in the area where they usually have speakers.

Why on EARTH would Borders choose to have a person who was cussing like a drunk speak in their store in the middle of the afternoon?

You can hand me the free speech line all you want. I'm all for free speech. But I also think that if people are going to curse up a storm like that, it does not belong in a bookstore with a large children's area at noon on a weekday.

 Whatever this woman was preaching on about, she could have made her point with a little more class...

Oh my, I go to Borders a lot and I've never heard anything like that. The one that I go to has an indoor/outdoor cafe. :D I love to go and chill out in the evenings!:D

I think people that use too many cuss words just sound unintelligent.

RPG as in the computer language?

Me too. I have never heard a speaker like this there before. They usually have a good variety of people, someone for all tastes and ideas but I have never heard anyone who just stood around screaming like an angry drunk before.

Nope, but just a geeky. Role Playing Game books (as in Dungeons and Dragons, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings fantasy role playing games...)

Me too. I missed whatever point this woman was trying to make because she just sounded like an idiot.

I would have been upset about this as well. I take DD to Borders a lot. I get my Starbucks fix and she gets her book fix so we're both happy. This kind of thing should be done in the evening and should be advertised in the store well before the event.

I'm sure they had flyers up but they would have just said who would be speaking. If you'd never heard of the person, you would not know what to expect.

Considering Borders generally gets pretty classy people to speak and sign books there, I doubt anyone would have expected them to have some one using foul language in the middle of the afternoon.

You could have offered to buy her a dictionary!;)

I don't go to our Borders here. I prefer our Barnes and Noble. It is much quieter and they have a nice cafe.

I don't go to Borders much either. Barnes and Noble has the discount card and it makes it worth it for the amount of books I buy. I would have asked to speak to a manager. That's REALLY not the place to have some freak screaming and cussing. Besides offending ME, I would have been pissed if I'd brought my little sister in there!!

I thought RPG was Rocket Propelled Grenade shows what I know

You might consider placing a phone call to Borders and asking sweetly who the foul mouthed speaker was at noon that offended so many of their shoppers? Give them something to think about. ::yes::

My dad always used to say that anyone who cussed just had a limited vocabulary. He'd tell me if someone (like a football coach) was on TV and he could read their lips and tell that they were cussing and he used it as a teaching opportunity for me.

Thanks all. I think I will write them a letter.
My friend had a later lunch time than I did today. She went down to Borders around 1:30 and said by then the speaker was gone.

:)

Double post...

sorry.

I found out who it was. It was some woman named Amy Goodman. I have no idea who she is. But that's the name they listed on their website.

I generally like Borders, and I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that they did not know that she would be a potty mouth, but who knows...maybe they did.

I am going to write them a letter though.

Oh, I know who she is. Has a t.v. and radio show called DEMOCRACY NOW. Lots of people identifying with her and her message.
