Rant - Borders has annoyed me...

My dad always used to say that anyone who cussed just had a limited vocabulary.

That's not correct at all. I have quite a large vocabulary, but sometimes only a 4 letter word gets the message across. And sometimes it's the only word that will fit the situation.

Crankyshank, I actually tend to agree with you but that's what he always said. That being said, I do my absolute best to never cuss in front of kids or in public.

Oh, I know who she is. Has a t.v. and radio show called DEMOCRACY NOW. Lots of people identifying with her and her message.

I've never heard of her, but I'd think someone who was that popular, would be able to know better than to swear like a sailor in a public bookstore in front of little kids...

I tried emailing Borders but the form to email them off their site does not work.

That's fine, but not in front of people who walk unsuspectingly into a store to look for books. There were little kids there.

At the very least the store should have had someone at the front door letting people know what was being said inside.

And I still think someone, esp. someone who apparently is discussing serious politics like this author was, comes across as far more intelligent and reasonable when they do not cuss.

I don't think Hillary Clinton was using that kind of language when she was there a few months ago, and I doubt Mitt Romney will be using that kind of language when he is there in a few weeks.

Any words that are good enough for our VP to use are good enough to hear in Borders IMO. Or perhaps Cheney isn't a serious politician. ;)

At least she didn't use "shove it", I assume. LOL

I'm a Republican but I strongly disagree with Cheney's use of those words where he used them.

I don't care what political affiliation anyone is, I just think mature people ought to know better than to swear in public bookstores.

I agree....I was just saying that to the person who made the comment about Cheney. There are definitely places where it's not appropriate and you ran into one of them.

Just curious, what word was she using? You can PM me or just put the first letter of each. IMO there are some words that are worst than others in that setting and some that are almost commonly used nowadays.

Borders, in downtown Boston, as in the big bookstore chain that is.

I was just in there with my BF during lunch. Today is his birthday and he wanted to look for some new RPG books and we made our way into the crowded store and heard the ranting shouts of some speaker who was apparently being sponsored by Borders.

Every other word out of this womans mouth was a swear word. I don't care what she had to say or what her point was. This was a crowded, popular bookstore on a weekday afternoon at 12:30.

You could hear her quite clearly from the childrens section where I had gone to look for some Disney books for my neices (who were not with me, or else I would have just walked out). There were several children sitting in the kid's area reading, and more than one parent who looked a little uncomfortable...

I have no idea who this speaker was. I did not see her and I did not ask. I only assume she was a sponsored speaker because she had music playing in the background, and was very loud and was drawing a crowd in the area where they usually have speakers.

Why on EARTH would Borders choose to have a person who was cussing like a drunk speak in their store in the middle of the afternoon?

You can hand me the free speech line all you want. I'm all for free speech. But I also think that if people are going to curse up a storm like that, it does not belong in a bookstore with a large children's area at noon on a weekday.

 Whatever this woman was preaching on about, she could have made her point with a little more class...

If I were you I would lodge a complaint to Borders. Not just locally, but right to their main office. Use your computer. I found if I am unhappy about anything, and it is legit. You are in your right to voice your concern. I too am tired of the profanity that is permitted in the presence of children nowadays, all in the name of free speech. What about clean air space? We have rights too. Try their Customer Care link below.

I tried that and when I hit submit it doesn't work. :(

I will send an actual letter...more effective anyway. :)

Here is the website that tells all about her. She sounds very educated and has been a journalist for a long time. I didn't see any swear words, or dirty words. I didn't look too long, though.

It is just strange because the person talking did not sound like this at all...

Maybe it was a stand in?

I don't know. :(

Thanks for the PM Esmerelda. Your BF did hear one word that I would have felt inappropriate and I can understand others feeling some of the other words were inappropriate.

Since the speaker has a show that airs on PBS, I am rather surprised that she wouldn't just assume she should speak less colorfully in public. I think Borders should probably put in their speaking engagement contracts some restrictions on language. They might not have been aware (judging from her TV shows) that she would be using that language and therefore didn't have the staff or pre-planning to warn people.

The more i think about it, I really think iy was a different person, There were other people there, like a group of speakers, with one woman who was the primary speaker. I am really thinking it may have been some group filling in for her?
