So far so bad. After being really good, I went to Grandma's and gained 3 lbs! I know mostly water, but I've been saying that all summer long! Got on the scale Monday and was at 161! I can't fit into any of my what used to be "FAT" clothes! I have a wedding to go to Oct 3, and am actually considering not going, as I have nothing to wear, and really don't want to buy an outfit. I'm back down to 158, but with the long weekend approaching, I am frantic. I'm spending it at Grandma's!!!!!! There's the rant. Here's the question. Grandma asked me to pick up a Honeybaked ham for the weekend. I'm already making a huge pasta salad (cold pasta w/ chicken) so we don't have to spend the whole weekend cooking. The ham was an extension of that thinking, but I'm afraid that with all that food sitting around, We'll just be picking at it all weekend. I was wondering if it would be inconsiderate to suggest that I make one of their favorite dishes instead of bringing up a salty, sugary, hunk of pig fat, that we will be picking at absentmindedly? I find I am more successful when I actually have to prepare a meal. I can control what goes in the food and only prepare enough for that meal, so I'm not picking at leftovers. What say ye all? Am I being rude? Any other suggestions?

Keep the Faith!

I think that's a great idea, Tracy!! I don't think it's rude at all and Grandma would probably be glad to have you do that!! Go for it, I say!!:D

I don't think that as an Atkins follower I can help you with your question. I would do better with the ham (not eating the glazed part) than I would do with any pasta salad or something like that.

Good luck at grandmas. How fortunate you are to have a close extended family :)

Oooh, this is a hard one.

Of course, you could ask Grandma to omit the ham. That would be easiest in the short term. However, what's going to happen on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc?

I was very thin up until my first child at age 32. Then, I didn't loose the weight right away, so had to diet. And the operative word is diet! While I was dieting, it was easy to get people to cooperate. Once I was thin again, it became tougher. Slowly I regained the baby weight, and then some! People have a hard time recognizing that someone who is a size 6 can still have a "weight problem" but I do, and will have it forever! I will never be able to eat anything I want in unlimited quantities; I will ALWAYS have to be careful, and make choices.

This time, I know that this has got to be a permanent change, and that I will ALWAYS be facing temptation!

If you are having a hard time dealing with it NOW, it will be impossible long term. There will always be times when you will have to resist, or else accept the fact that you can "cheat" from time to time, but it will cause a setback. As long as you get back on track, you will reach your goal, and maintain your loss.

The important thing is to keep on trying, and not beat yourself up over every slip! You had years to develop bad eating habits; it's going to take more than a few months to correct them permanently.

Maybe you could take some extra "snacks" with you for when everyone else is eating the stuff you should be staying away from. Pick up a veggie platter or take veggies & cut them up there for snacking. I'm eating low-carb so I'd snack on the ham all weekend and forget the pasta salad....LOL! Take some diet drinks that you normally don't splurge for so you still feel like you're treating yourself.

Best of luck. I know you can handle it!

Ha! Ha! Ha! LOL! LOL! LOL!
Grandma goes to Florida next month! Holiday get togethers are short and sweet, unlike the endless summer months of indulgence. It is very difficult for me when they come home. While I miss them terribly when they're gone, and I certainly enjoy them when they're here, mine is the only family I know that GAINS weight during the summer. (It was worse when My in-laws lived here! Man they really know how to eat. Some wonder DH is 300+ and I went from a size 4 when I met DH to a size 12 in no time.) It is hard to resist, and not too good for family relations either. She gets terrribly offended if we don't want her type of food. Don't get me wrong. There is nothing like grandma's food, but bacon fat and gravy are their own food groups in her house. It is very hard to eat anything she cooks (since we're not doing atkins, though maybe that's the answer!
:p ) without slamming on weight. And she cooks for an army. Once she made 18 breadded, fried pork chops, for 3 adults and 2 kids! Get the picture? While your advice is sound, and I start out will all the best intentions (I even cooked all the meals for the first half of the summer) by the end of August, I'm busting out of my clothes! I have decided to not get the ham and take the abuse. She won't be here much longer to be angry, and I am the one who ultimately pays the price. So I need to Keep the Faith and be true to myself. I'll thank me later.:p
Thanks All!

As always, KtF!
