Hoping since this is the budget board someone would know. DS freshmen has just gotten into a fraternity and must dress up. We had bought a few button up shirts and polos for him when we took him. He is needing more and we noticed that a large number of the young men were wearing Ralph Lauren. We have only bought Ralph Lauren from department stores. I am not about to spend 80 dollars for each shirt. We live within a short drive to a Ralph Lauren outlet. I have never been to one before. For those of you that have been, how much do the button down shirts normally run as well as polo shirts? Also, we are needing to purchase a navy blazer. Any suggestions on where to buy one that won't brake the bank? Thanks!

Can't tell you exactly but DH loves Ralph Lauren polos and I buy them at TJ Maxx or the outlets. They are still pricey, but way cheaper than at the department stores...I would never pay full price for one.

It all depends on the shirts. There are times you can find a great deal. I found a few wonderful bargains for my Husband's birthday.

At the outlets, a button down (depending on type) usually run in the $50-80 range. Varies more with sales too. And they usually accept your AAA card for a discount. :thumbsup2

For a blazer, I would try Kohl's with a discount coupon. They can be pretty affordable there. :)

Thanks! I think we may plan a trip to the outlets in the next couple of weeks. I'd like to pick up 2 or 3 of the button down shirts and maybe a couple of polos to start with. Have you priced out what polos run by chance? Also, thanks for the suggestion of going to Kohls for the blazer. We have one right down the road. ;)

Not sure where you live, but the Belk stores in our area often have sales on Lauren clothing. I agree, I would never pay full price. I think his stuff looks great---just not in my budget. I think we got DS's navy sport coat for about $100 on sale.

We also have an outlet not too far away. The outlet sometimes has sales, too.

As OP stated, look at TJ Maxx or Stein Mart. They often have Lauren polo shirts for $25-$30.

Thank you so much! I feel like there have been so many "extra" expenses since taking DS to college in Aug. Now that he has gotten into the fraternity, there are MORE expenses. Do we have to buy more clothes.....no, but it would be nice if DS feels comfortable. He doesn't ask for much ever and is always grateful. I just need to budget this. We also have a Stein mart here where we just moved to. I have only been in there one time looking for something specific and didn't have time to really look around. I will add that to our list of places to look at.

i second trying marshalls/tj maxx too. often they have RL items on their own rack. i love RL socks and pick them up there.

some outlet items are lower quality. I have a few tees my mom picked me up there and we could tell the difference, boxier, thinner material. they do have some genuine stuff that makes it in though. just take a look at the material, shape, and details before you buy there.

True, I found a beautiful purple label RL silk scarf once at an RL outlet for an excellent price.

Thank you for the heads up about the quality! Because we haven't shopped at the outlets before, I didn't know that. I will be checking out the stores everyone suggested. Does anyone know if on Black Friday if stores like Belk or Dillards run good deals?

I always shop the clearance racks for men's polo's, especially at Macy's and Dillards. When they have the extra 40 percent off clearance is when I buy things. I also buy at TJ Maxx and Marshalls. Last night there were some beautiful pants for 39.99 and always polos for 29.99 to 39.99. The best bargains for me are the jackets and hoodies. Since I'm in Florida no one buys them until it gets gold so they get to the clearance racks quickly.

I agree outlet stores are not as high quality and I think you would be better off watching the stores and becoming familiar with the merchandise so you know when there is a good deal. Ask your son to see what other brands his frat brothers seem to wear so he will have a variety of upscale designers to pull from. Some People know when someone is imitating a good wardrobe and when they really do buy designer names all the time. Some people even watch the collections so they know when others are wearing last years designs...

TJ Max, Marshalls or the clearance rack at Macys - for us. The only time we pay full price is when we can use the 20/25% off anything even designers.
