Rain ponchos vs. rain jackets

When i went on vacation this summer, we used ponchos and umbrellas. A poncho really isn't enough for a downpour--You still get wet because of all the openings. Ponchos plus mini umbrellas really did the trick. We bought $5.00 ones from walmart and they really did the trick.

Word to the wise: IF YOU KEEP PONCHOS, WASH EVERYDAY!!! or you will be walking around wondering who didn't put on any deodorant, then realize its you!!!!

We bought ponchos 1 year because it was 85 degrees and POURING. I am not putting on a rain jacket in that heat and humidity.

But if we go in the winter, we pack rain jackets. We usually need to carry something for evenings anyhow, and rain jackets really do work better than ponchos (at least in my opinion).

The best tip I ever received was to buy the Dollar tree ponchos. We each carry one in our pockets and if it rains we pull them out and when the rain is over we throw them away. Before this tip we would try to make do with the ponchos you buy in the park, but they are pretty substantial and you can't easily carry them in your pocket. We don't like to bring bags. When our kids were little and we had strollers it was a non-issue because you can store about anything in a stroller. We are going in January this year and we are still going to bring the rain ponchos. :wave2:

I'm surprised I haven't seen anyone mention this yet: some attractions will make you take off ponchos before boarding, but NOT rain jackets (unless something changed since our trip 2 years ago, I should say). Because we had one poncho and one rain jacket, we were keenly aware of this during a couple of all-day rainstorms. I actually asked a couple cast members at the ride entrances about this and they said that only ponchos need to be removed, not jackets (even though our jacket and poncho were pretty much the same material/weight/etc.)

We ended up getting another rain jacket at Fun Finds in Downtown Disney. It was super cheap, decent-looking, lightweight, and folded small. And, sure enough, I was never asked to take it off for a ride. We'll only be bringing light poncho-like rain jackets from now on!

I like the ponchos because they are folded up so small and then they can be disposed of after use.
