...are they needed? Is there a reason for putting them up other than to keep you from getting wet as you're walking past that part of the house (like out a door)?
DH and I are back to possibly building -- we found a builder this weekend that we *really* like, a house plan that we *really* like, and before upgrades the plan is in our price range. And it's in a community we *really* like. So we're trying to price the upgrades (and determine what is "necessary" (like the tek-shield energy saving stuff) and what we can do without (like crown moulding in the dining room or french doors into the living room/study)) to see if the upgrades are going to push the cost of the house beyond what we can afford. If it doesn't, then we're probably going to build.
Anyway, one of the things they *don't* include on this house as standard are rain gutters all the way around the house. They're included in the front, but I don't think they are on the back and know they aren't on the sides. So the question is... are rain gutters really necessary? Or is that again something that we can do easily after-market?
We've already decided if we build that the sprinkler system and back yard sod will be put in after we buy. We could also do the moulding ourselves in a few of the rooms if we wanted it. My dad's done it in several rooms in their house and I've seen how he does it and he would help, so I know we can do it. But other things (like a whirlpool tub instead of regular garden tub or a gas range instead of electric) would be much better done during the build process instead of after.
