We are getting on our 3 Night cruise tomorrow. They are calling for 80% chance of rain this Sunday which is the day we are supposed to be at Castaway Cay. I'm so bummed. Does the ship do anything special onboard if they can't dock at Castaway Cay?
There's an 80% chance of precipitation, but the forecast is for scattered thunderstorms and 0.1" of rain with a high of 80F. More than likely, the scattered storm will pass at some point during the day and the remainder will be fine. This is how most days in the Caribbean are.
If the rain ends up cancelling activities on the island, they are able to add additional activities on the ship (more movies, crafts, etc). Have fun!
It will be wind/currents that stops you getting to Castaway, not rain. IF the ship is unable to dock then navigators (and schedules) will be changed to represent more of a sea day, often with a few extra character appearances such as a dance party.
All 4 of our trips to CC it has rained: reasonably short storm and then it passes; usually in the afternoon. The longest for us lasted about an hour. Lots of people go back to th ship when it rains, leaving CC largely empty once the rain lifts
We had a CC day where we were out snorkeling when the Disney Cast Members made an announcement that everyone needed to get out of the water. We could see very dark clouds and rain heading our way. Before we got back to shore it hit, heavy rain and fairly strong winds. When we did get out of the water we huddled under a beach umbrella to wait it out. It lasted about 15 minutes, passed and the rest of our visit was perfect. Can't guarantee this is what will happen but from what I have read; this is typical!
Unless there are thunderstorms, most activities will continue on the island.. rain did not stop us and it only lasts a short time. You can go into one of the stores on the island or under an umbrella. Even the restrooms are a good choice if you do not want to get wet. But hey, your on an island .. a Disney island.. I say get wet and enjoy the view!
a year ago (Jan 2016) we successfully docked at CC and it was only about 70 degrees, strong winds and lots of rain. The night before our cruise director Invisible Darren assured us that all activities on CC except for parasailing would go on as scheduled. Well we docked, got up and went out onto the pool deck and decided that we would spend the day onboard. Cold and windy we have plenty of at home (but we would consider 70 pretty nice for January). Reports were that lots of thing got cancelled early on in the day. They really didn't have a backup plan for this case - where they thought CC would be OK but wasn't really.
This is an old theme park trick! If you get a good rainfall, chances are it will be temporary. But a lot of people will go back to the ship and then not come back or come back slowly. If you stay on the island, or at least stay alert on the ship, you are likely to find it MUCH less crowded than usual when the rain ends. Hit Pelican Plunge or just relax on a lounge chair, but enjoy the lower crowds. It will probably be quite a while before it gets crowded again, if at all.
