Racoons or other thieves of Disney

Here in Michigan we have plenty of racoons and the ones who live near the state parks are the smartest of them all... They rival Yogi and Boo-Boo!!! They will open your coolers and take the goods... I have even seen them get into campers when the opportunity has presented itself.

So, my question is, how smart are Disney coons? Will I need to stow away my coolers or buy locking ones? How often do the critters of Disney have their way with your food???

Ken

We keep our food locked up in our camper. We do not set anything outside unless we are eating it right then. We've never had a problem with critters.

I've never had an issue with critters except for a squirrel. And really he wasn't the issue....the DH who left a brand new bag of pistachios on the picnice table was the issue! :lmao:

Many of our State Parks here in Florida are owned by the raccoons. We have been raided many times over the years. Friends of ours have even had tents clawed through, to get to coolers inside. However, I have never had a critter issue at FW. No use inviting trouble by being careless, but I don't think you will have any trouble.

I usta keep my fishing bait in caontainers under the camper so it would be in the shade. There has been a couple times I've had my catfish bait/bait containers broken into and the bait eat'n or stolen.
My first thought was maybe it was Bob,,but he wasn't into fishing back then,, so I'm gonna guess it was coons, or armadillos, or squirrels, or lizards, or really smart revengeful fish. :confused3

But I'll go with coons.:confused3

I will say that there are possums and armadillos at the fort. I had to report one armadillo to management so they could trap it. It not only was not afraid when it entered the middle of our site with us there, it tried to attack me & DH and BOTH OF MY DOGS!! And no, I don't have teacup dogs. It had to be sick, but it wasn't rabies.

IMHO it's always a good idea to secure your food so as not to tempt wild animals who should remain wild.

Or REALLY pizz'd that ya'll were in his site ! :lmao:

I think it goes without saying that you try to secure your food as best as you can... Like ynottony99 said, I have seen some determined coons that have stopped short of driving the camper away to get into the food that is waiting inside that blue or red or green or yellow igloo cooler...

of course food left on the table is fair game.

Reminds me of my honeymoon, so many moons ago at John Pennekamp State Park. We went there after doing a week at DW {at Jellywood...}

Anyways, wifey dearest cooked up a pot of spaghetti noodles and asked me to drain them, so I did, right over the chain link fence at the back of our campsite.

There sat a racoon, the bravest racoon I have ever seen. Lil jerkyboy lept up, deftly avoiding the boiling water and knocked the pot out of my hands, and hauled away the noodles!

Watched the same lil basset climb the fence and raid the dining flys up and down the row.

Never a problem at FW, though!

Never had a problem at the fort. We leave our food in a regular cooler and rubbermaid bin. We would never leave anything out though and always toss trash before leaving the site.

never had a problem at the Fort with Raccoons or anything small in size..... but........... on our last visit in Jan-Feb 2010, we did receive a written warning on our arrival to store food away as they did have bear sitings... Yes I did say bear!!! ;)

How adventerious are the Disney critters? We use a vertical platform lift to get in and out of our RV, we normally just velcro a screen over the opening. We do have a door which we will close at night.

Last year there was a bear issue, but they've since been caught & relocated. The bait they used? Exactly what the bears went searching for in the campground......dog food & doughnuts. :rotfl2:

We camp with a tent, and we keep non-perishables in plastic crates and boxes. At night, all food goes in the car.
